MERCER
To meet the increasing trade of the district the Waikato Shipping Company have opened up the Waipa river service. List Friday their first boat took a heavy cargo from Nguruawahia to Pirongia, the goods then being conveyed by road to Te Awamutu. As the transit of goods by this route is cheaper than by railway thero is likoly to be a large domand for steamor space, especially from Auckland. The Waikato river is still rising and on Saturday last was 7ft 3* in. above summer lovol and had overflowed its banks near the Maori Pa. From Pokeno thero (has been a stoady flow of water and although it has spread out in all directions the wa'er lias not yet risen up to the lovol of the road by the side of the railway line. The Mercer Town Board hold their meeting this evening when tho new member (Mr A. H. Glass), will be formally welcomed and the Balance Sheet for thej year presented.
