TUAKAU.
TUAKAU TOWN BOARD. At the monthly meeting of the Town Board held on Tuesday last there were present Messrs Dynes Fulton (chairman), J. Pirrot, W. Barnaby, W. G. Graham, J. H. Craig, with the clerk (Mr A. H. Tapper,). THE LATE PRIVATE S.MEED. Before proceeding with the business of the meeting the chairman remarked on tho sad loss the district had sustained by the death of Private Norman Smeed who had been killed in action. Mr Fulton referred to the unblemished character and sterling qualities of the deceased soldier who by reason of his unassuming and honourable disposition was the most popular young man in the district —lt was resolved that a letter of sympathy should be sent to the deceased soldier's parents expressing tho Board's sympathy with the family in their loss. CAPTAIN RYDERS ILLNESS. The chairman also referred to the absence from tke meeting of Captain Ryder owing to his having had to undergo an operation in the Auckland Hospital.—lt was resolved that a letter should be sent to Mrs Ryder expressing the Board's sympathy with her and hoping that Captain Ryder would soon be restored to his former health. TRAIN FACILITIES. The General Manager of Railways, Wellington, wrote, in reply to tho Board's letter asking for an additional train about 5 p.m. from Auckland, that tho ieductions in the service had been made with a viewto releasing more mea for military service and he could not make any alteration in the train service as suggested. i The Town Clerk of Pukek ho wrote that his Council did not regard j the complaint as to the train service necessary and they would not take action in the matter. |III.I.IAi:l> SALOON. In further pursuance of the reprc- j bontations made that the Billiard j Saloon premises should be provided with proper sanitary conveniences Mr W. Glasgow, as' agent for Mr Foley, tho owner, wrote that proper sanitary arrangements would he provided for the premise^.
On the motion of Mr Pirrit it was resolved that the chairman should interview Mr Glasgow and explain what sanitary conveniences would satisfy the Board. FINANCE ( OMMITTEE. Messrs Barnaby, Pirret and Craig were appointod as members of the Finance Committee in place of Messrs Free and Glasgow. SURFACEMAN - . The question of the permanent employment of Mr Wilson as surfaceman was referred to the Finance Committee to report at the next meeting. DOMINION ROAD. It was resolved that a notice should be served on Mr A. Madill, senr., requiring him to have blackberries cleared off the Dominion Road. PURCHASE OF PLANT. The chairman reported that he, in conjunction with Mr Craig, had purchased a horse and harness and also scoop and other plant at a recent auction sale. This equipment, it was considered, would be of great service to the Board in conducting work in the district. The chairman's action was confirmed. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £133 9s Id were passed for payment.
