In the departure ot Pte. Les Mitchell for the battlefield the Pukekohe Fire Brigade, which already holds a record among the Fire Brigades of New Zealand for the number of men in proportion to its numbers who have enlisted, loses yet another member. For the purpose of farewelling their colleague the firemen held a smoker at the Fire Station on Friday evening of last week wheu, on behalf of the Brigade, Capt. N. L. Brown presented Pte. M'tchell with a fountain pen and Secretary Rollinson handed him a silver butterknife for Mrs Mitchell. The recipient duly returned thanks. A pleasant evening was spent in harmony.
Considerable interest was exhibited yesterday in Waiuku in an exhibition of motor ploughing by a three furrow Mogul tractor plough, the agents for which are the International Harvester Co. The machine in operation yesterday was of S h.p. and it did its work both rapidly and most efficiently. In addition to ploughing, the tractor ran be adapted for discing, harrowing, chaff-cutting, threshing, wood sawing, baling straw, etc. A similar machine, but of 10 h.p, has been ordered through tho local agents, Messrs Frank Perkins and Co., by Mr G. W. Keith, of Maungatawhiri.
To provide photographic pictures of New Zealand for "our boys" at the front a " Snapshots from the Home League of New Zealand" has been formed as a branch of the Y.M.C.A in Auckland. This should appeal to amateur photographers. The sense of isolation experienced by our brave defenders now far away from the Dominion would, it is believed, be much relieved by providing them with photos of scenes most familar to them. All that is asked is that a few photos of relatives or of homes of those who have left the district should be supplied. Readers are asked to make application for enrolment forms to Mr Enos S. Pegler, Manurewa, from whom further particulars can be obtained, Mr Pegler having been authorised by the League to form a braneh covering the Pukekohe to Papatoetoe districts.
