TUAKAU

[The Tuakau Supply Store, Ltd., are now the local agents for the "Times" and copies of the paper are obtainable at their premises."! There was a representative gathering present at the " send-off" concert and dance held in the Public Hall on Friday evening last in honour of Messrs Claude Deed, Harry Rich and Harry Williams, who are shortly leaving for camp, and Private W. Delahunty, who was on final leave. In the absence through illness of Mr W. 0. Graham, Mr W. J. Deeble presided, A well arranged programme of musical and instrumental items was contributed to by the Misses Mayall, Dickson, M. Woodbridge, A. Linder, Messrs Jack Ryder, H. E. Outed, Barkum, Ethbridge, W. J. Deeble and Master Jim Rogers. During the evening the Chairman presented each of the departing •' boys " with a wristlet watch, and in doing so expressed the hope thit they would all do their best to uphold the British flag. They were also presented with comforters from the Women's Patriotic League The recipients suitably| responded and expressed their thanks for the gifts. One of the most highly respected Tuakau " boys " in the person of Piivate Norman Smeed his laid down his life in the cau<e of his country, his death in action having been reported to have taken place on June 7th last. No-nun, who was the fourth son of Mr and Mrs W Smeed, was well-known in the U>wn and district as a splendid type of young manhood and prior to enlisting in Januaiy of last year with the 12th Reinforcements he was engaged on his father's farm on the Whangarata Road. Many will also remember him as a prominent member of the Tuakau Football Club. Much sympathy is extended to Mr and Mrs W. Bmeed and family in their bereavement.
