KARAKA.

KARAKA ROAD BOARD. MONTHLY MEETING. The usual monthly meeting of the Karaka Road Board was held on Saturday last, when there were prestnt Messrs J. Batty (chairman), J. Schlaepfer, D. Jamieson, Macpherson, J. R. Bryant, with the clerk (Mr H. E. Glasson). CAMP CREEK. Mr Mahaffy attended and renewed his application for the Board to put pipes over the stream known as Camp Creek, which ran through his and Mr Glasson's properties. The chairman produced an estimate of the cost, approximately £135, of a double 4-feet diameter pipe culvert in concrete Mr Mahaffy, however, suggested that a wooden culvert (6ft x 6ft) would suffice for many years, but as it affected the respective properties of Mr Glasson and himself he thought that possibly some more satisfactory arrangement could be arrived at if all the parties met and discussed the best plan to be adopted. It was accordingly arranged for the chairman, Mr Bryant and the owners to meet on the property. ASSESSMENT COUBT. The clerk reported that Mr Arthur E. Wright had agreed to act as the Board's assessor 'at the Assessment Court in place of Mr E. D. McLennan, who had intimated that he could not accept the appointment. bremner's bridge.

Messrs Hesketh and Bichmond, solicitors, Auckland, wrote on behalf of Mr W. Bremner making a claim against the Board in respect of damage alleged to have been sustained by him from storm water on Lyell's Bridge Road. It was alleged that the damage was occasioned by the failure of the Board to clear the culvert crossing the road about five chains from the bridge. The writers stated that had the culvert been kept clean the storm water could have escaped and in their opinion no damage would have occurred to the embankment or bridge To avoid litigation they were prepared to accept the sum of £l2 in settlement of such claim.

Arising out of this communication the chairman reiterated that the Board had been advised that they were not liable to maintain the bridge and approaches and that the bridge in question was not a public one.

Mr Macpherson reminded the meeting that when he brought forward the motion at the last meeting it was not seconded but the chairman pointed out that no member could force a motion on a meeting and that each member must abide by the decision of the majority. After some " hints " at resigning, Mr Macpherson proposed that the Board should visit the spot, and.this being seconded by Mr Jamieson it was agreed to meet there on Tuesday, the 19th June. The clerk was also instructed to reply to Messrs liesketh and Richmond that the matter referred to was under consideration. NIGHT-SOIL DEPOT.

A letter was read from Mr H. J. Hawkins making application for a remission of the fine of £5 imposed upon him by the Magistrate recently in connection with the existence of a night-soil depot at Paerata. He pointed out that on the advice of the Distiict Health Officer (Dr. Hughes) he made application for a site on Mr Jamieson's property and only continued using the depot, after he had been given notice to close it, as the result of Dr. Hughes' advice. Ho asked that the fine should be remitted as he had apparently been wrongly advised. Mr Jamieson said he understood Mr Hawkins was advised by tho Medical Officer that lie could " go on " with the depot and that he would take the responsibility. Mr Hawkins, he said, had •juffered considerably. Mr Schlaepfer, who was asked his opinion by the chairman, said he felt sure none of the ratepayers in his Ward would agree to remit the line. On the motion of the chairman, the clerk was instructed to reply to Mr Hawkins that the Board could not accede to his request. STATION ROAD Mr Jamieson asked that a ; should be made far forming Station j Koad to Wilson's Corner, and it was J agreed to allow the sum of £ls to be spent. II L'XCIMAX-FAEKATA KOAD. Mr W. F. Blanchard, of Paerata, I wrote in reply to the Board's letter | as to permission being necess iry j before removiug fence on tho road 1 that ho had received consent from ! tho County Council some time ago.— It was decided t-i take no action under the circuit tauc(s.
