NEW SALE YARDS SITE AND BOUNDARY ROADS

A deputation from the Papakura Town Board (consisting of Messrs R. M. Gillespie, T. H. Markwick, and W. Richardson) waited on the Franklin County Council in Pukekoheon Thursday last and asked the council to attend as a body to view Wellington btreet and other approach roads leading from the main South road to the site of the NZ. Loan and Mercantile Agency Go's proposed new sale yards. Mr R. M. Gillespie pointed out that all the Board asked for was that the Council should expend about the sum of £25 to make Wellington street in such a condition so that the approaches to the new sale yards would be satisfactory to the company. He pointed cut that some misunderstanding had previously arisen as to the requirements of the Company. If £25 was sanctioned for the work that would satisfy all parties If the roadway to the saleyards was improved it would not only be an advantage to the users of the road as a stock route but would materially benefit the town and district generally. Mr Gillespie added that it was also desired that the Council should inspect the boundary roads so that the Board could ascertain what mutual arrangement could be arrived at between the Board and the Council.

The Chairman enquired if he understood that the Board proposed to extend their boundaries, to which Mr Gillespie replied in the affirmative.

The Chairman informed the deputation that he felt sure the Council would agree to grant the sum of £25 for the necessary work for the saleyards road and he regarded it as a modest request. Mi Maikwick pointed out that in the interests of all parties he trusted the Council would favourably consider their request to have their boundaries extended, especially in view of the fact that their township was likely to improve in the future The Chairman informed the deputation that the Council wished the Town Board every success in their endeavour to extend their boundaries and pointed out that the amount of rates received fiom the portion of the County which it was suggested should be taken over by the Board did not pay its way Mr Gillespie thanked the Council for their courtsey and the deputation then withdrew.

It was subsequently arranged for the Council to attend at Papakura on the first Tuesday in July.

NOXIOUS WEEDS. The Public Trustee, Auckland, wrote asking as endeavours were being made to find a purchaser for Mr F. H. Wilson's section that the Board's request for clearing it of noxious weeds should be left in abeyance. On his motion it was resolved that the Public Trustee should be given seven days' notice to have the site cleared, failing which the Board would have the work done and charge it to the Trust Office.

NIGHT-SOIL REMOVAL. Mr H. J. Hawkins, contractor, wrote asking if the Board would consent to his carrying night-soil from Papatoetoe to the site recently acquired by him in Young's Beach Road for the Papakura service subject to his paying a royalty for so doing He pointed out that he had experienced a great difficulty in obtaining a suitable site at Papatoetoe and if consent was given it would expedite negotiations. The chairman explained tnat the site chosen had been approved by Dr Hughes, the District Health Officer, but he (the chairman) was afraid that the suggestion that Pap lkura should be used as a dumping ground for Papatoetoe would meet with much opposition Mr Richardson expressed himself as opposed to the proposal. Mr Holt said he was in favour of acceding to Mr Hawkins' request, provided some distinct stipulation were made that in the event of a nuisance being complained of the Board should have power to give two months' notice to determine the privilege. Mr Markwick supported Mr Holt's views, provided Papatoetoe had the privilege for six months only. Mr Campbell expressed dissatisfaction with the site chosen, pointing out that the existence of the depot would be prejudicial to futare building developments. He suggested that the matter should be postponed f »r a month. Mr Lins'rom supported Mr Camp-, bell.

Mr Lloyd urged that the contract should be proceeded with. Messrs Richardson and Markwick were both in favour of the site as proposed Mr Campbell then proposed that the matter should be postponed for a month, but this was not seconded. A motion by the chairman that the night soil depot Mr Hawkins and approved of by the District Health Officer should he accepted was agreed to and it was decided that the question of including Papatoetoe should be left in the chairman's hinds to report at the. next meeting. SALEYARDB.

The chairman reported that the Board's deputation waited on the County Council last Thursday and that the Council had arranged to visit the district at an early date when they would also inspect the boundary roads which it was proposed should he taken over by the Board.—lt was agreed to entertain the visitors on the occasion. EXTENDED BOUNDARIES. With regard to the extension of the tow n boundaries it was agreed tint this matter should be left to the chairman, it being suggested that he might pcsiibly arrange to interview the Prime Minister on the subject on the occasion of Mr Massey's forthcoming visit to Pukekohe. TOWN BOARD ACT.

Tin lion Sir F. W. Lang M.P., wrote in reply to the Board's letter (asking him to brine: suggested amendments of the Town Board Act before Parliament) that there would be some difficulty in getting the members of the House together before the session, but that he would bring the matter before Mr Massey and would do his best to induce the Government to give effect to the desire of the Board. A meeting of the Domain Board was subsequently held when the same members were present. Mr nolt brought forward a scheme for the cultivation of the Village G.een, consisting of 2| acres, which was suggested should be ploughed and cropp )d. It was proposed that the land should be cultivated on certain terms and conditions and that money should be advanced for the purchase of seeds a nominal rent being charged Mr Linstrom expressed the opinbn that it would be better to charge a rent of £2 and let the tenant cultivate the ground. Mr Richardson urged that only potatoes should 1)0 planted and with this stipulation Mr Holt's scheme was adopted.

PAPATOETOE

[The Papatoetoe Agent for " The Times " is Mr W. J. Dilworth from whom copies of the paper may be ordered.]

SCHOOL CONCERT There was a record attendance at the school concert on June 7th, when the Auckland Concert Company journeyed to Papatoetoe and rendered an excellent programme. Proceedings opened with the singing of the Nationol Anthem after which the chairman, Mr James Hunter, explained the object of the series of concerts to be held during the winter months. He stated that many improvements were urgently required in the school grounds, the main needs being a bicycle shed and extra accommodation for horses. He thanked all those who had attended to give their support to the scheme and he hoped that before long the improvements contemplated by the committee would be assured.

The programme was then proceeded with. The opening item "In the hour of Softer Splendour" by the Company was very well received. Mrs D. Ward received an ovation for her rendering of patriotic numbers. Mr J. Watson demonstrated that he was the possessor of a rich bass voice, receiving several encores, his best item being "The Storm Fiend, 1 ' which was sung with great gusto. "Morning," sung by Mr Harry Pollock, was well received; he has a very pleasing tenor voice and quite held his audience. Mr A. Jaggs greatly amused his hearers with his comic ditties, making a great hit in "The Night I fought Jack Johnson." Other performers were Mr F. Ward, Miss D Ward, Madam Ward, Mr H Langton, and Mr Norton.

The sum of £9 were taken at the doors and after paying expenses £7 will be added to the school funds.

Edward J Drumm, an elderly man. who was engaged on road work on the Great South road at Papatoetoe some weeks ago, was charged yesterday at the Auckland Pol ce Court, before Mr E C Cutten, S.M., with having made the following utterances at Papatoetoe on February 19th last, viz : "If England had not had 'a two power' Navy there would have been no war. England caused the war. A man was better off in Germany than in this country as Germany was a free country." Evidence as to a conversation he had with accused was given by Mr Arthur Selby, farmer, of East Tamaki, and Constable Wade spoke as to the statements made to him by accused. The Magistrate reserved his decision, the hearing of a second charge in respect of alleged disloyal utterances on April 27th being adjonrned.
