PAPATOETOE

PAPATOETOE TENNIB CLUB. I The annual meeting of the Papa-1 toetoe Tennis Cluh was held on j Monday last when there was a j very fair attendance. Mr F. Waters (president of the Club)! occupied the chai^. In his opening remarks, the chairman congratulated the Club on the healthy state of the finances, considering that so many of the ' male members were away at the j fiont. In fact, he said, every eligible man in the Club was now fighting or had enlisted. Mr Bradstreet (vice-president) asked those present to do their duty to the boys who were away and j to stick together so that when they returned they would find the Club ir> ! as good a condition as was the case j when they left to take up arms in defence of the honour of the j Empire. They could only do that by still continuing to be members of the Club and by working wholeheartedly together. The balance sheet showed receipts amounting to £ll4 and expenditure £72, leaving a credit balance of £42.

During the past year, it was seated, three new courts were put down in asphalt and the remaining spurts were reported to be in rather a bad state of repair. Some discussion arose as to what should be done this year towards putting them in order.—lt was proposed by Mr Bradstreet, seconded by Mr Larson, and carried that one court should be tarred, the matter of the other two courts being left in the hands of Messrs Larsen, McCulloch and H. Bryant to decide what was best to be done.

The Secretary (Mr McUulloch) reported that the proceeds of the annual concert amounted to £ll 2s 6d. During the past year 18 new members had joined the Club which greatly assisted in swelling the funds. This season to date two new members had come forward and it was the hope of the Committee that many more would be forthcoming. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year, viz -. President : Mr F. Waters ; vice-presi-dents : Messrs J. A Bradstreet, B. Weston, Jas. Wyllie, T. Clow, I. Gray and H. Swaffield; secretary, Mr S McCulloch ; treasurer, Mr H. Bryant. Ladies' Committee : Misses M Wills, N Goodfellow, E. Weston, M. Carruth, W. Wyllie, Mrs H. Bryant, Mrs Larsen and Mrs 8. McUulloch. Men's Committee :

Messrs J. A. Bradstreet, F. Wyllie, Richardson, Larsen, Andrew, Elder, E. Bradstreet and W. J Dilworth, Auditor : Mr T- Clow (re-elected). It was resolved that the Secretary should write to Mr Clow thanking him for his past services and conveying to him the Club's appreciation of the same.

A hearty vote of thanks was accorded Messrs McCulloch, Waters and H. Bryant for their support to the Club during past years, they having been in office ever since its incorporation- Th 6 ladies also were complimented for the able manner in which they had carried out their duties in the matter of supplying refreshments on Club days. To those who had contributed trophies the Club conveyed their best thanks.

It was decided unanimously to raise the subscriptions for the ensuing yea? to men £1 5s and ladies 15s, with an entrance fee for all new members of lUs men and ladies ss. SCHOOL COMMITTEE A meeting of the Papatoetoe School Committee was held on Monday evening last, the members present being Messrs J. Hunter (in the chnir), Hamilton, Dilworth, Scott, Haddock and Hall.

The Chairman suggested that as the Road Board had fixed their meeting night for the same evening as the School Committee usually met the Committee should alter their date of mooting and it was decided to meet on the last Monday in the month.

Mr Haddock reported that be had in company with Mr Dilworth approached Mr Bryant (the Biding Member) in reference to securing a small portion of the Recreation Ground for a horse paddock. Mr Bryant considered that they would not have any trouble in securing the sa-ne but up to date no reply had ber-n received from the County Council. It was decided that the Secretary should send an official letter to the Council in reference to the matter. A letter was read from the Education Board, in reply to the Committee's request for a subsidy towards the building of a bicycle shed, stating that the Board was willing to give £ for £ (not exceeding £ls) on the amount of local contributions, the work to be completed to tho satisfaction of the Board's architect.— Messrs Hunter and Hall wero appointed as a Committee to wait on Mr Coles, builder, re plans and specifications of the proposed bicycle shed, the Committee being empowered to act.

Mr Haddock reported that tho concert arranged for Juno 7th was well in hand and that tho conveyance of tho Auckland performers had been arranged for.

A letter was received from Mr Danes, the caretakor of the school, stating that lie would be unable to continue his appointment after the end of June. —It was resolved that an adveitisoinent should bo inserted in the " Times " for a caretaker for tho school A letter was received from the llondorson School Committoe requesting that two delegates from Papatoetoe should attend a Conference of School Committees to bo hold at Henderson on Juno Kith and Messrs Dilworth and Haddock were appointed dolegatos. Mr Hunter reported that there was very little dry ground for tho children to play on and he suggested that tho present fence boside the school should bo shifted back some 50ft and that tho ground taken in should be asphalted.-- A Committee (•'insisting of Messrs Hunter, Hall i and Hamilton was appointed with ' lower to act.
