ANZACS IN FRANCE.
A THKILUNU INCIDENT. Mr C. E. AY. Bean, official correspondent with the A.J.K., cabling from tJie Australian headquarters in France on t h.i .*}oth April, says:— During the German attack on April 1->th thero occurred an incident wliicli will live as long as Australian history lasts. I have now seen the officer who actually saw the whole thing happen. A small post of Western Australians had I).vn cut olf early in the attack, but they managed to get a messenger through stating that tncy were bowling over the enemy like ninepins, but needed ammunition. J3y the time the message arrived it was impossible to get ammunition through the surrounding German-;. The [x>st was visible a luilj down the valley, still holding out, and the watciiers gazed anxiously as more and mure Germans debouched opposite it. All well knew the end must shortly come. After an hour and a half the rifle fire from tli>> po>t suddenly set mod to cease, and then a line of men sprang to tln*.r feet and charged down lull into a mass ol Germans. Bayonets were seen working, then trie mass swarmed round our men, who were to sight. The bodies ot lour or five of tliein, including an officer. have since been lound. To-day and yesterday, Anting for Hi/' Common wealth elections took place at about (j(X) centres of Australian soldiers in France. The poll was taken under conditions almost exactly reminding 0110 of [Killing days 111 Australia. The wintry weather was broken liually three days ago, since when a most glorious spring nas suddenly arrived, covering patches of the Soninie bat tieIn Id at once with a sprinkling of green grass. I Jut the shattered trees mostly will never sprout Again.
