KARAKA.
KARAKA ROAD BOARD. The annual meeting of the Karaka Road Board and the annual meeting of ratepayers, fixed for May 3rd, both lapsed for want of a quorum. The meeting of the Board was adjourned until Monday, May 7tb, the members then present being Messrs Batty (chairman), Schlaepfer, Bryant and Macpherson, with the clerk (Mr H. E. Glasson). • The clerk formally reported that Mr Macpherson had been re-elected unopposed for No. 1 Ward, and that Mr J. R. Bryant had been elected unopposed for No. 2 Wftrd, in place of Mr Kidd (resigned). ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. On the motion of Mr #cblaepfer, seconded by Mr Bryant, Mr Batty was re-elected chairman. bhemneu's bridge. Mr Macphorson reported unfavourably on Mr Bromner's application for expenditure on the bridge leading to his place. He said it was essentially a private bridge being of no use to anyone but Mr Bremner. The filling at the end of the bridge was not on the road but in the creek, the road terminating at the edge of the creek. Mr Batty said that when the loan allocations were being made he as chairman put down £lo for the road leading to Bremner's bridge. The member for that Ward and Mr Bremner himself objected on the ground that the road was not a legal one and the amount was consequently withdrawn and allocated elsewhere. The Board's solicitors advised that the Board was not obliged to maintain the bridge and approaches. Mr Macpherson moved that no money be spent. The motion was not seconded and so the matter dropped. A DAMAGED BRIDGE. The clerk reported that Mr F. Wells, building contractor, had paid the £2 10s claimed for damage to the Whangamaire Bridge approach. ASSESSOR APPOINTED, It was resolved to offer the appointment of assessor for the district, relative to the new valuation, to Mr E. D, McLennan, of Papakura. A ROAD DEVIATION. A' plan was received from the Railway Department showing a road diversion at the Karaka siding, accompanied by a letter asking the Board to have the proclamation issued at the cost of the Department. It was agreed to do this. EXCHANGE OF ROADS. A plan was received from the Chief Surveyor, Auckland, showing a proposed exchange of roads through Urquhart Bros.' 'and, sections 8, 9, 15, etc., Karaka, accompanied by a letter pointing out certain objections.—lt was agreed to put the seal on the plan, the clerk being instructed to see the Chief Surveyor and to explain the Board's position in the matter. MISCELLANEOUS, Mr Schlaepfer produced a plan showing a new road through the Helvetia Ostrich Company's land and the same was approved. It was resolved to keep one team of horses on during the winter, there being a good deal of work to do on Heard's road which was not yet finished.
A letter was received from Messrs Wallace and Tutt, offering to spread scoria on their road for Is 9d a yard if the Board would supply it.—lt was agreed to get £ 5 worth of metal and more perhaps later on if the weather should be line.
It was resolved to pay 2s a year for rent of the enclosure containing the office.
Mr Schlaepfer reported that a ratepayer had moved his fence out into a' road in order to plough blackberries and that traffic was thereby interfered with.—As the road was under the control of the Board, which had not been applied to for permission, it was resolved to notify the ratepayer in question to remove the fence from the road.
It was agreed to notify the owners of land adjoining the Paerata Stream, above the • bridge on the Runciman-Paerata Pukekohe road, near Paerata, to remove the felled willows which were blocking the water and diverting it.
