We are glad to be in a position to contradict a rumour that gained currency in Pukekohe yesterday to the effect that Mrs Butler, wife of Mr Wm Butler, a well-known Pukekoh# tradesman, had passed away at a private hospital in Auckland. Mrs Butler, although still seriously ill, was this morning in a fair way towards recovery.
Another debate as to the propriety of the fragrant weed being in evidence at Council deliberations took place at WedS nesday's meeting of the Pukekohe Borough Council, In accordance with his notice of motion, Cr Patterson moved to rescind the resolution previously passed by the Council allowing smoking after 8.110 p.m., and this was agreed to. Cr Patterson then stated that if it was intended for men to smoke God would have provided them with chimneys, which caused Cr Bilkey to remark : "Well, a a good many chimneys will have to be provided" (laughter). Cr Pater>on next proposed that smoking should not be allowed to commence until 9..'50 p.m. An amendment moved by Cr Hamitton and seconded by the Mayor, that the time tor smoking should be o'clock, was, however carried, a further amendment by Cr Patterson to postpone the time for smoking until ( ),4 : > p m. not being seconded.
