MANGERE.

(See also Page 1.)

I A very pleasant and most profitable "Afternoon Tea" was / given by the Mangere branch of the Women's Patriotic league on Wednesday and although very wet it did not damp the ladies' spirits, for they turned out it full force, Mrs Currie presided and after giving all a hearty welcome put forward a very strong plea for a little more help, at the same time showing what had been done and how much more could be done. Several ladies from neighbouring Leagues spoke and gave very interesting accounts of work done in their districts. A musical programme was provided and a recitation given by Mrs Tate was very much enjoyed. To the click of knitting needles, music and speeches a number of ladies were hard at work filling "hussiffs," under the direction of Mrs Hain. Among the visitors present were a number of returned soldiers who motored out from town for the occasion. Last, but not least, afternoon tea was partaken of and justice done to the good things provided by the ladies.

Mr Feist's sale of furniture was well attended, bidding being very good. Mrs Feist is not leaving the district school as rumoured and the district will thus not lose the services of so capable a teacher Miss Campbell had the misfortune to meet with a slight accident near the railway crossing while motoring home from town recently. Fortunately no one was hurt. It was funny to see the caj being vowed out of the ditch by a " little white horse." Mangere now has a motor service to and from Auckland and the same should prove most accommodating to settlers as the traius are running inconveniently.
