PAPATOETOE

[The Papatoetoe Agent for "The Times" is Mr W. J. Dilworth from whom copies of the paper may be obtained.] A concert will be held in the St John's Hall on Wednesday next in the form of the annual gathering for the presentation of trophies to the winning members of the Papatoetoe Tennis Club. Messrs Andrew and Andrew are catering for local requirements by arranging as from to-day for a motor-bus for Auckland to leave Papatoetoe Station daily at 9.30 a.m., returning from the City at 3,30 p.m. for Papatoetoe. ROAD BOARD The first meeting of the Papatoetoe Road Board, subsequent to the recent election, was held at the Board's office last Monday evening, when the members present were Messrs J. Wyllie, E. Niccol, J. Bryant, S. Woolfield and A. TJ. Timewell, with the Clerk (Mr H. C. Ernest).

ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN On the motion of Mr Wyllie, seconded by Mr Bryant, Mr Niccol was re-appointed chairman. Mr Niccol thanked the Board for the trust they had placed in him. He stated that he had done his best at all times and had tried to do what was right for the district. He also wished to thank the members of the Board for the loyal manner in which they had assisted him to carry out his duties. Mr Niccol then welcomed Mr Timewell as a member of the Board. WATEE OVERFLOWING The Chairman reported that the water could not get away on Bangatoto road due to a 6in pipe running into a 4in pipe, with the result that water collected near Messrs Gillard and Pohlen's properties, Mr Gillard had offered to Dut in the larger pipes if the Board would supply them. He (Mr Niccol) recommended that the larger pipes be supplied. It was resolved that seventy 9in field pipes be supplied for Rangatoto road and that the matter be left in Mr J. Bryant's hands to see that the work was carried out. The matter of the cesspit on Coronation was deferred. CONSULTING ENGINEER The Chairman stated that he had received several applications for the position of consulting engineer but he recommended that the appointment be left in abeyance.—This was agreed to. NIGHTSOIL REMOVAL As nothing further had been heard from the contractor, Mr Hawkins, the matter of establishing a sanitary service was deferred. DAYB OF MEETING It was decided that the meetings of the Board should be held on the first Monday in each month and it was further arranged that Tuesday next should be the day for the annual inspection of the roads in the district by members. OTAHUHU TECHNICAL SCHOOL

A letter was received from Otahuhu Technical School asking for a donation towards the upkeep of the school and stating that any public body contributing could have a representative on the Advisory Board. The matter was left in the hands of the Chairman to ascertain further particulars. BTRAYING CATTLE As several complaints had come to hand as to cattle straying on the roads in the district it was resolved that the attention of the Ranger should be called to the same. RANGATOTO ROAD Mr Pohlen attended and reported that he had filled in the holes on Bangatoto road with stones but he did not think it was a good job. Proper metal was required. He also asked the Board to put tarred scoria on the footpath. Ths Chairman did not consider tarred scoria at all necessary but said they would inspect the road and see what Could be done, COUNTY COUNCIL EXPENDITURE Mr Pohlen then asked if anything had been decided in reference to the ratepayers' recommendation that a deputation should wait on the Manakau County Council to enquire what was being done with the rates collected in the Papatoetoe district. He added that he was willing to form one of the deputation. The Chairman informed Mr Pohlen that the Board would adhere to the resolution as passed at the ratepayers' meeting, viz: "That the Road Board should approach the Council," NEW TOWN HALL It was resolved that a special rate of id be struck upon all the rateable property in the Papatoetoe Boad District in connection with the Town HaU Loan and that such special rate be an annual recurring rate during the currency of such loan. Mr J. Routly, architect, attended and submitted plans and specifications of the proposed building. Mr Hodge, a member of the Hall Committee, thought the floor of the building was too low to the ground and he suggested that the height of the floor should be raised one foot as the section was very low in front. Mr Foutly explained that the matter c r uld easily be remedied at a very small cost. After some discussion it was Bgreed that the architect should call for tenders for the hall, such tenders to be in at the architect's office not later than Monday afternoon, June 4th. in the Board's roading conditions should be allowed in the construction of the roads on the above estate.— Agreed to. MISCELLANEOUS It was decided to repair Carruth road and also a portion of Puhi Nui road at Hodge's end. A letter received from Mr F. May stating that owing to business reasons he had been unable to again offer his services as a member of the Board. He thanked the members for their courtesy to him during the past year and wished the present Board every success.—lt was decided to send a letter to Mr May expressing the Board's regret that he could not agAin accept nomination. Mr J. Ward stated that he was prepared to act as foreman for the Board at the rate of 10s per day, but the matter was deferred until the road inspection was made.
