A PERPETUAL SMOKER.
Tho happiest, tolm-co smoker in England has permanent quarters in a West Kml tobacconist's shop. He smokes all day without ceasing, except to take in his lirs " refilled pipe. He can smoke any mixture, any pipe. Ho knows nothing of burnt tongue, smokers nerves, smoker's heart, and smoker's vision. Ho has, indeed, no tongue, nerves, heart, or vision to worry about. Tho happy smoker '« a clever and rather mirthful invent on of his tobacconist owner. All smokers know how unpleasant are the first few smokes of ;■. new pipe, until it : ri "broken in." Tho happy smoker is a mechanical " brcakerUi" of customers' new pii>cs. H S facial features are merely an electric switch and a pair of rubber hiw. He is, in fact, only an oxidised plate, about the -i/.c of a door-plate, on the v. ill of the tobacconist's shop. • I hate new prpes," says a customer. ■•Th.it'- soon remedied," says the tebneconVt. He charges the new pijx> v'ih tobacco, hands' it to an assistant, says cryptically, "Let Adolphus smoke this I ijK three times," and to the customer, • Conic lia.rk in an hour, please." " Adolphus "is worked by a p'ston .'lii.l U'llow* arrangement, driven by i le:-trie : tv. T!ii' -i:;lit of a plaque in the wall, with a pair of rubber lips, puffing away with apparent gusto at a briar pipe", iiiak ng the smoker's wheezy inspiratii n-. and exhalation-; " f s reno enjoyment, i" the funniest and most uncnnilV of sights.
