MANUKAU COUNTY COUNCIL.
Monthly Meeting.
The monthly meeting of the Manukau County Council was held at the County offices in Auckland on Tuesday last, when there were present Crs H. R. Mackenzie (chairman) J. C. Bryant, F. H Brownhill, A. E. Hattaway, A. Bell and A. Muir with the clerk (Mr A. Bell). THE WAR A.\D FOODSTUFFS
A circular letter was received from the Waipara County Council forwarding copies of resolutions passed by that authority suggesting that potatoes aud wheat should bo grown wherever possible to help tho nation in ithe war. The Waipara Council asked the Manukau Council's support to the same Tho Chairman remarked that it would be far better if the Government organised all the essential industries in the Dominion.
It was resolved that the Council should approve of the resolutions submitted but would suggest that it was the duty of the Government to organise all the essentia! industries in the Dominion. JIOWICK SC UuOI.
Mr E. Bostoek, chairman of the Ilowick School Committee, wrote complaining of ho state of the footpath outside the school. The. matter was referred to the Engineer for attention. PAPATOETOE RECREATION OBOUXD Mr Duncan Finlayson wrote applying for the grazing rights over the Papatoetoe Recreation Ground for three years at a rental of .£l6 per annum.
On the motion of Cr Bryant it was resolved that tenders be called for the grazing rights, the Chairman expressing the opinion that in all such cases tenders should be advertised for. Cr Muir and the Clerk were authorised to draw up the stipulations under which the grazing should be let. A MANUREWA REQUEST The Manurewa Town Board applied to have the cesspits at the corner of llall road and Great South Road removed from the line of footpath and placed elsewhere, as they were dangerous to pedestrians leaving the foothpath and crossing llall road. On the motion of the Chairman it was resolved that the Council could not comply with the request as they had only sufficient money to carry on the necessary maintenance work during the year. GOVERNMENT (iRANTS A letter was read from the Minister of Public Works (the Hon W. Fraser) in reply to the Council's request that he should transfer some of the items on the Estimates for the county towards the cost of the Creamery aid Brown's bridges, Clevedon. The Minister asked that the Council should indicate which items they suggested should be transferred but pointed out that only an item which had boon authorised could be transferred. He recommended that the Council's Engineer should consult with Mr Murray, the District Engineer, Auckland.
On the motion of Cr Brownhill it was resolved to ask the Minister to authoiise the votes for tho two bridges, seeing'that they had appeared on the estimates for the past two years. It was also decided to solicit the support of the Hon W. F. Lang, M P., in the matter. A SATISFIED RATEPAYER Mr F. M. Allen, of Brookby, wrote enclosing cheque for metal supplied and desired the Clerk to kindly convey to the council his thanks for the metal supplied. WILLOWS FROM ('REEKS
Replying to the Council's application for logal advice on the question of the removal of willows from creeks, the Crown solicitor wrote suggesting that the council should consult their own solicitor. It was resolved that the council should circularise other local authorities for their support to induce tlio Crown Law Office to give their own interpretation of the law on tho subject. A MANGERS DRAIN Mr Alfred S. Bullen (Wanganui Avenue, Ponsonby) wrote on behalf of his mother (Mrs C. Bullen, of Otahuhu) who is the owner of a section on the Favona Estate, Mangere, relative to the construction of an enclosed drain in place of tho present open tiench which ran through her property and which served to take away surplus water from the road. As Mrs Bullen con-
templated building on tho section it was .suggested that a different drain 1 as proposed would be in the interests of the council. It was resolved to reply that provided Mrs Bullen found the pipes the council would be prepared to carry out the work as aiggested, STATION UOAIi, PAI'ATOETOE Mr 11. W. Hall, Papatootoo, wro f e relative to the drainago of Station road, Papatoetoe, in front of his property. The trouble, ho stated, arose through Mr Sanderson tilling up the open drain in front of his section and also in front of the section sold by him to Mr Richardson and neglecting to put in tiles. It was slated in the letter that there was a six inch tile drain in front of Air Cole's and Dr Bower's sections. To rairy away the storm water all that was required was to connect the end of his open drain with Cole's dram. Pipes could bo put down to carry tin storm water away, most of which c.iine from tho road from Mrs Goodfellow's property to the other end of his drain. Mrs Goodfellow, it was added, was willing to contribute towards tho cosl ol [Hitting a diain in front of her section. It was resolved that the Chnirmau and Cr Bryant and the Engineer should inspect tho drain and report. M I.I'M, WANTKD Tho acting clerk of the Manurewa Town Board (MrT. W. l-OREVA.v'B KEPORT The Foreman (Mr C. Dixon) reported as follows : Mangore Riding.—Mrs Bullcn, a property owner on Favona road, has asked to be allowed to fill in the main drain running parallel with her boundary. The drain in question has a natural outfall and cannot be tilled in without a 12 inch piping being put in It is one of the most important outlets on that road and could not bo done without.
Papatoetoe Riding.— Repairs to metal patching on Station and Kolmai roads have been attended to. The carting of necessary scoria for Papatoetoe had been placed in Mr O'Loughlen's hands, ho being the cheapost contractor for the work. Papakura Riding.—No work had been done in this riding except on the Brookby road, which was being thoroughly overhauled but the work had been hampered by bad weather. Wairoa Hiding. The County engine scarifier and roller were in this riding working on metal patching. The grader was also engaged on side roads and watertables. The contractor for Brown's bridge has commenced his contract. He has one foundation made already and is working on the excavation of the other. The report was adopted.
