MAUNGATAWHIRI VALLEY
THE LATE MR Wm. APPLEBY The death occurred at Mount Albert on Friday, April 20th, at the age of 76 years of Mr William Appleby and Auckland's band of early pioneers is the poorer thereby. Arriring in the Domion about sixty years ago with his parents he was engaged for some time assisting his father in his brick and tile works at Surrey Hills and later on at Drury. Leaving the brick industry he was for some years engaged in the timber industry in the Waikato district. About 1880 he settled on the land at Maungatawhiri Valley where he continued in active operations until about two years ago when he sold out and retired to Mount Albert. As a settler he was well known in the Franklin County, his genial disposition and kindly nature gaining for him the esteem of all with whom he came in contact He was always to the fore in helping on any movement for the advancement of the di strict, and served*terms on all the local bodies operating in the district. He is surviyed by his wife and a family of nine sons and three daughters and a number of grand children. His youngest son went to the Front 18-months ago, and is at present in a hospital in London while a grandson is on his w r ay to the front.
