CRUISE OF THE MOEWE.
FIGHT WITH THE OTAKI
RAIDER OF MANY COLONIES.
llcuter's correspondent at Copenhagen states that during the fight between tho Moewo and the New Zealand Shipping Company's Otaki, British prisoners en tho raider forced the iron doors of their quarters. German solders armed with hand grenades prevented them reading the deck. Tho Moewo on ono occasion was cruising outside Capetown. At another time siio was off Rio de Janiero. She then turned and made for Germany, by way of Newfoundland and the North Atlantic, when her coal was running out. The British prisoners wero kept under strict surveillance, and wero isolated from tho others. The Moewo carried four big guns. She had five torpedo tubes, and was fitted with high removable masts and dummy funnels. She was repeatedly painted different colours. She also had a sham steering-wneel. At night time the cruiser went at full speed, in the daytime siie steamed slowly. The Moewc passed Elsinore cn March 21, and. entered the Sound. On arrival at Kiel tho British officers among tho prisoners were sent to Karlsruhe and the men t-o Westphalia. The tire on the Moew.e caused by the Otaki's shells, was responsible for insufferable neat. The Mocwe stripped her victims of metal littings. During the homeward run a British armed steamer attacked the Moewe. in an obstinate fight the British steamer s second officer was killed, and tho gunner's arms were blown off. The steamer was sunk and the survivor: - rescued.
