PAPATOETOE
[The Papatoetoe Agent for " The Times " is Mr W. J. Dilworth from whom copies of the paper may be obtained.] ANZAC DAY ANNIVERSARY,
Anzac Day was celebrated at the Papatoetoe School last Tuesday afternoon when a goodly number of residents of the district attended. The proceedings were opened by the singing of the National Anthem. The children were then drawn up into line and addressed by Mr J. Hunter (chairman of the School Committee), who gave a very inspiring address on the meaning of Anzac and paid a tribute to the gallant sons of New Zealand who had died on Gallipoli. The address was followed by a speech from Mr Brinsdin, of tlie Education Board, who was accompanied by Mr Farrell, the Board's architect. Mr Hunter next spoke as to the new additions to the school buildings and in a few well chosen words thanked the Education Board for the same, Mr Brinsden replying on behalf of the Board. Whilst the adults were having afternoon tea the children went through a number of drills which were much appreciated and reflectel great credit on the Staff of the School. After the children had had tea and a scramble for lollies they proceeded to plant a pohutakawa tree in memory of Anzac. Mr J. Watson, who for over twenty years had been a member of the Papatoetoe School Committee, did the planting and in a well-chosen speech showed the wisdom in the choice of tree selected as the pohutakawa was to New Zealand what the oak was to England. The improvements to the School were then inspected by the visitors and residents, which brought to a close a most successful and enjoyable gathering.
