Through the generosity of Cr Baiter Pukekohe will noon have installed in its midst a handsome drinking fountain for public use. In asking the Borough Council at the meeting on Wednesday to accept his gift Cr Barter said it would serve as a token of his entry into local public life and of his pleasant association wfth the Council as Chairman of the Waterworks Committee. The offer was accepted with thanks, the Mayor pointing out that it was a new departure in Pukekohe for a gift of a public nature to be forthcoming. On the reading of a circular from the National Efficiency Board at the meeting of the Manukau County Council on Tuesday last, the Chairman (Cr H. R. Mackenzie) said that the employment of women on the roads, as suggested by the Board, was absurd and the only thing the members were doing was going about the country taking evidence. -They had no legal power to do anv,- - thing. The Imperial resources were running the war and the producers ought to be considered as they were the supporters of the country. One man who produced was worth 50 who did not. The Chairman contended that the industries of the Dominion should be organised instead of beating around taking evidence. Crs Muir and Bell both expressed the opinion that as far as the Council were concerned they had .no proposals to offer as the Council 'required all their men --for necessary - work and no new work would be undertaken, the Council having, owing to shortage of labour, a difficulty in carrying out present requirements. It was ultimately decided that the clerk inform the National Efficiency Board that in their opinion the suggested scheme for the employment of women on the roads was unworkable. The Chairman in a humorous vein suggested thai there were a \ number of " old women " on the. Efficiency Board now and perhaps if a few young women were on the Board some better business might be done.. - ftubbei Stamps ol all descriptions may be ordered at the Office of the 'The Times."
