CHILDREN'S PATRIOTIC COMPETITIONS.
Complete success attended the children's competitions held in the Premier Hall. Pukekohe, last Tuesday in aid of the Belgian Children's Fund. The gathering was devised by Miss MUlicent Taylor FS.M. with the worthy object of assisting a deserving cause and at the same time as a source of instruction and encouragement for school pupils. Competitors from all around the district were numerous and the judging of the various classes w as in progress all day, many parents being in attendance to witness the efforts of members of their families. With characteristic energy and ability Miss Taylor carried out the managerial arrangements, Miss N. Williams and Mrs H. West loyally co • operating in the undertaking. Thanks to these ladies' efforts the gross proceeds of the function total in the vicinity of £SO, including a sum of £3 produced by the sale of flowers and home-made lollies.
The duties of adjudicating in the instrumental and vocal selections were skilfully and impartially carried out by Miss Clarice Wood, LAB., of Auckland, whilst the awards for elocution were made by the Revs. J. P. Cowie, S. Nixon and J. B. Suckling, Mrs Jas. Wy lie acting as judge for Scotch dancing. In the evening a musical programme was submitted, including contributions by some of the prizewinners. In this department the young performers, Gladys Armstrong and Jim Hooper, who had respectively gained first honours as vocalists in the girls' and boys' classes under eight years of age, are particularly deserving of mention and both were loudly encored. Action songs rendered by several ' children were smart and dainty features of the programme whilst pleasure and amusement was afforded by a Highland dance executed by little mites in the persons of Jean McArthur, Ina West, Molly Asher, Moira Nixon, Margaret Grigor, Loma Cave and Phvllis PetehelL An appeal song given by Winnie West (WTuuku), aided by a recitation by Edith McNally, resulted in a sum of over £4 being collected.
