Cr. Patterson's Resignation

[TO THE EDITOR. J

Sir, —In regard to the letter from Cr Patterson appearing in your last issue permit me to mention that no part whatever of the £l6 mentioned by Cr Roadly was in respect of anything supplied or done after my nomination a 9 a candidate for the Council. All the Finance Committee, including Cr Boadly, well understood this. In so far as Cr Roidly diverges from this his memory is defective. Quite a large number of questions may arise if the payment of the £l6 was illegal, but the Finance Committee is neither a Debating Bociety nor a Bchool-of-Law. It considered only the question raised by the Auditor's letter. Cr Roadly'a complaint that he was not taught a legal point on an entirely collateral matter is somewhat weak. What obligation is there on anyone to teach bim ? Only the muddleheaded would unnecessarily drag in other questions which, however indid not concern the matter io hand. Everyone" knows that the Borough printing work is distributed among the printers of the town, and that in the ordinary course a share (not exceeding £10) would come to me during the first year of my term of office. The £l6 had not been regarded as coming within the rule until the Auditor questioned it more than twelve months later. Why then should anyone be astounded to find that 1 had done other work—not exceeding £lO in value—during the first year of my term of office ? Cr Roadly's absurd expressions of wonder, astonishment and ignorance on this and other matters are doubtless designed to suggest lack of candour in the rest of the Finance Committee. But they will only remind Ratepayers of that exalted personage who was astonished to find that apples could get inside dumplings, and wondered how they got there! Yours etc., J. PATTERSON. Pukekohe, '2Bth March, 1917.
