MERCER.

A staff of the Waikato River Board's workmen are now busily engaged in clearing the Opautia Creek of willows and other obstruction, for which work the Government made a grant of £3OO some time ago. A good deal of the trouble has been occasioned by neglectful owners through when cutting willows allowing the branches to be deposited in the creek, instead of re moving them. On the Maramarua Creek the Board are also busy and are expending about £2OO in clearing away the obstructing willows. It is hoped that the latter creek will soon be in first class navigable condition. The River Board's dredge is working in . the Maungatawhiri Creek, the expense being borne by a loan raised by the settlers in addition to a subsidy from the Government. So the River Board are certainly doing their best to improve the conditions of the Waikato waterways.
