PUKEKOHE'S MAYORAL ELECTION.
Latest Development.
A privately convened meeting of supporters of the respective candidatures of Messrs 0. K. Lawrie, Jas. Costello and H. G. Lysnar in connection with the forthcoming mayoral election in Pukekohe was held in the Premier Hall last evening, the candidates named having agreed that the meeting should make the choice by vote as to which one of the three should proceed to nomination, the other two to retire from the contest in favour of the one selected. The attendance numbered over 60 and Mr J. P. Asher was voted to the chair.
At the outset of the procee lings Mr Lysnar announced that he had withdrawn his candidature so as to allow the meeting a free vote between two candidates only. Brief addresses were given by both Messrs Lawrie and Costello, a pledge being given by either to abide by the result of the meeting and to loyally support the Candidatuig of the one receiving the greatest number of votes.
A ballot resulted in favour of Mr Costello by 21 votes as against 18 recorded for Mr Lawrie.
Mr Costello, in returning thanks for the confidence reposed in him, assured the meeting that, if elected, he would devote the necessary time to the duties of the Mayoral office both in and out of the Council Chamber.
As announced in our advertising columns, Mr Costello has called a public meeting for Monday evening next in the Premier Hall when he will address the electors and will detail his policy. He particularly invites ladies to attend the meeting.
