PAPATOETOE
. (See also p'g-? 1) METHODIST SUNDAY SCHOOL A most successful concert was held in the Methodist Hall on Tuesday last, being a continuation of the Methodist Sunday School Anniversary. There was a record attendance. The chairman (the Rev. Slade), in his opening remarks, spoke on the upward progress of the School and remarked on the brill'ant prospects for the coming year. The secretary (Mr Christopher) read the annual report which stated that on March Ist, 1916, the scholars in the various classes totalled 74 and 16 in the senior Bible Class, whilst the total for March 1917 was 83 in classes and 19 in Bible Class. The teachers staff numbered six and a superintend ant. During the year the School had the misfortune to lose the services of Mrs Tidd and Miss Burton as teachers and also M r Scanlon. Miss Lusby and Miss Knobbs had been accepted as teachers to fill the vacancies. During the year seven members of the Bible Class had become members of the Church which spoke well for the work in the Biblo. School. Two members of the School, Mr Scanlon and Mr J. Hard, had left for the front.
After the secretary's report had been received the Rev H. Rauston M A., delivered a short address to the scholars and parents. He characterised the Sunday School as the most important part of the Church's work. He said it would bo pleasing for them to know that there were 29,000 scholars attending Methodist Schools in New Zealand and concluded his remarks by asking the children to be happy and gladful. The Superintendant (Mr S. Atkinson) moved a vote of thanks to all those who had assisted in the Anniversary and in the various other functions during the year and also to Mr Foster for his able training of the children in the musical part.
After the business was concluded prizes were presented to about 80 children. Items of the concert were as follows :—Pianoforte solo, Miss Matuschka ; soDg, Miss L. Reid ; quartette, Fred Sanderson, E. Elder, E. Burton, L. Kendall ; action song, Misses L. Reid and A. Matuschka ; tableaux, United Kingdom, by scholars.
Special Harvest Thanksgiving Services will bfr held in St. John's Church on Sunday next, morning and evening. All gifts will be forwarded to the Leslie Orphanage. At the monthly meeting of the Papatoetoe School Committee it was decided to hold a concert in St John's Hali on Wednesday, 4th April, in aid of improvements to school grounds. A party of vocalists and instrumentalists from Auckland will , supply the programme. The committee appointed Mr Davies as caretaker for the present year. The secretary reported that 82 scholars had left the school at the end of last year through passing the Sixth Standard and at the beginning of this year the attendance was only seven short. Additions to the roil this year were 18. It was decided to have an attendance shield placed in the School to be competed for by the various class rooms.
On Saturday last four teams of bowlers journeyed from Papatoetoe to Otahuhu to play friendly return matches with the Otahuhu Club. Otahuhu were again successful in carrying off the honours, the only win being registered to Papatoetoe being to Mr W. Knight in the first year team. The weather was perfect and the green was in great trim. The following were the scores, the Papatoetoe players being mentioned first in each case, viz. : First Year—Farnsworth, Swaffield, Cutforth and Knight 19 beat Harvey, Elliott, Cook and Pearce, 17. Second Year—Tidmarsh, Galbway, Dilworth and Eawnsley 11 lost to Christie, Sheppard, Brown and Harris, 31 Senior Fours—Trimble, Coles, Hall and Andrew 18 lost to May, Whitmore, Clark and McFadden, 22. Bryett, Bryant, Watson and Daisley 17 lost to Nicholls, Christie, Wood and Harper, 37.
