Local Appeals Before the Auckland Military Service Board several local appeals have this week been heard. The appeal of Francis Maguire, farmer, of Tuakau, was allowed under Section 35, there not. being two fit brothers in the family. Juliu Maguire, who was classed as unfit, was similarly dealt witb. When the appeals of F. G. and J. H. Ryder, of Tuakau and Onewhero respectively, were called Major Conlan sai 1 that appellants had been called up under section 35. It appeared, however, tint tiny had two brothers at the front He asked that the appeals be allowel. The board allowed both appeals. The appeal of John Beatty, butcher, of Pukekohe, under section 35, was allowed, he be:ng able to show that his only brother in New Zealand was unfit.
Appeals by Timothy J. Rogers, farmer, of Pukekohe, and his brother, Vincent A. Rogers, farmer, now of Waitoa, were adjourned until to day James T Douglas, farmer of Pukekohe, called up under section 35 was represented by Mr. *V.- P Hopkins, applied for three months exemption to enable him to put 25 acres in grass and clean his ground of blackberries and put his fence in order. He stated that he was the owner of 53 acres at Pukekohe wh'ch he worked by himself. It was difficult to get lab >ur and what was available he had to pay 2/- an hour for Appellant was allowed exemption until 10th May. Wm. R. Douglas was exempted until April 15th and the appeal of a third brother, John 3. H. Douglas, was allowed under section 35.
In the of Joseph McShane, James McShane, and William McShane, all of Pukekohe, the last named was granted exemption until April 30th. and the appeals of the other two were allowed under section 35.
James Cain, store assistant, Papakura, was exempted as he had two brothers already serving, and one other waiting to go into camp. Maurice P. and W. J Coughlan, f.irmers, of Pukekohe. both appealed °n the ground of being engaged in an essential industry. Tha former was exempted subject to being liable in the ballot and the latter was given leave until May 30th. Sydney S. Brewster, Whangarata (Mr A. E Skelt>n), appealed against being called up under section 35 on the grounds that he was not a member of the first division. An adjournment was granted until to-mor-row for the purpose of obtaining (the marriage certificate.
Bamuel E. Barriball, farmer, Waiuku, was allowed exemption under section 35 as one brother was in camp and another was unfit. The brother in camp enlisted before the appellant received notice that he was called up. Frederick G. Rapson, farm jr, Onewhero, said two brothers volunteered last September, one was accepted and the other rejected His appeal was allowed. The appeal of Henry B. Rapson, unfit, was also allowed. Robert Qoin, farmer, Mauku, who appealed on the grounds of occupation anl uniue hardship, and asked for two months' leave to adjust his affairs, was given until April 30
