MERCER.
A mishap occurred to one of the Mercer Rowing Club's boats recently when the outrigger was shorn off and the boat damaged considerably. This was the result of alleged carelessness on the part of the driver of a steam launch. Some time ago the School Committee raised funds by means of a Fancy Dress Ball for the purpose of erecting an Honours Board to bear the names of local men who had offered their services for the Empire. The Board, which is a very handsome one, is now completed and is on view in Auckland. It is intended to place it in a suitable position in the Town Hall and to arrange for a ceremony for the unveiling of the same. A social and dance took place in the Mercer Hall on Friday last in honour of Pte. N. Chadwick, who was on his final leave. Mr G. H. Stubbs, on behalf of the Patriotic Committee, presented a wristlet watch to the guest of the evening, wishing him good luck and a safe return. Mrs Bush presided at the piano and Messrs F. Freeborn and R. Kelly acted as M.C.'s. Altogether a very enjoyable evening was spent.
