TUAKAU.
Messrs Lapwood Bros, have made arrangements to restart work at their Tuakau fiaxmill at an early date.
Mr Dynes Fulton, chairman of the Tuakau Town Roard, has been appointed a member of the Licensing Committee for the Raglan County. It is proposed to hold a Patriotic Sports meeting on Saturday, the 31st March. Tuakau has a good name for its patriotic efforts and there is every reason to believe that in the hands of the committee appointed the sports should be a gigantic success. Those forming the committee include Messrs H. Craig, D. and J. Fulton, Pirrett, C. Smeed, W. Barnaby, W. Young, A. E. Tapper. P. Lapwood, J. Taylor, A. Bark, H. Wylie, Patterson, Milne, C. Parker, W. Graham, P. Lewis, W. J. Dceble, F. Thompson and H. Uuinlan.
At the social organised by the Presbyterian Bible Class and held in the Church on Monday of last week there was a good attendance of members to bid farewell to three of their number who are leaving for camp to-morrow, namely, Messrs Frank Henderson, Henry Madill and W. McKee. The Rev. Butterworth, who presided, in a fitting speech presented each of the boys with a soldier's Bible suitably inscribed. A varied programme of vocal and instrumental music was carried out which was highly appreciated. The ladies provided supper and after the singing of the Natioaal Anthem the company separated, The secretarial duties wtre satisfactorily carried out by Miss M. Woodbridge. At the meeting of the Tuakau Town Board last Tuesday a vote of condolence was passed with the widow and family of the late Mr G. D. Hunter.
TUAKAU TOWN BOARD
The monthly meeting of the Tuakau Town Board was held on Tuesday last when there were present Messrs Dynes Fulton (chairman), J. H. Craig, J. Pirret, and Capt. Ryder with tho Clerk (Mr A. H. Tapper).
BY-LAW CONTKAVENTION
The Chairman mentioned that the Board's Engineer (Mr John Routly) had reported that a building, which was being erected by the Rev. L. Foulkes on the Henderson's Estate, was not in accordance with the plans and specifications and that it would be necessary to have the same removed.
Mr Craig and the other members considered the Board should act on the Engineer's report. The chairman stated that he had interviewed the owner who had expressed regret that the Board should have reason to adopt the cour3e suggested. The clerk on the motion of Mr Craig, secondod by Mr Pirret, was instructed to communicate with th« Rev. L. Foulkes and to notify him that the building would have to be taken down within a month.
TENDERS. The chairman having reported that he had accepted the tender of Mr W. Smeed for crushing, carting, and spreading metal on the Henderson Estate and also the tender of Mr A. E. Mason for forming the road, his action was approved of. .V NUISAXCE. In regard to a complaint made by Mr J. H. Quinlan of a disagreeable smell arising from an unsanitary area near the post oflice the chairman reported that in conjunction with the engineer (Mr Roulty) he had visited the spot. The engineer condemned the place stating that the septic tank was not sufficiently large and stagnant water had been allowed to remain too long. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Pirret, it was resolved that the clerk should write the engineer instructing him to notify Mr Foley (the owner concerned) that the Board condemned the septic tank as insanitary and everything appertaining thereto and requested that his immediate attention be drawn to it. It was also decided to notify the Health Officer of the nuisance.
UKNDEBSOx's ROAD. The engineer, Mr John Routley, notified the Board that tho sum of £lls was available for expenditure on this road. —It was decided to lay blue metal on the road the whole work not to exceed £lls. PHOFOSED BUSINESS PREMISES. The cleik reported that the engineer had not passed the plan for the erection of shops submitted by Mr Deeble, who had been informed accordingly. HARRIBVILLE KOAI>. Mrs Mary McGahan asked that tho footpath near her house bo improved. The chairman stated that he had visited tho road in question but did not consider it a matter of urgency The clerk was instructed to write Mrs McGahan that the work would be done as scon as possible. INSPECTOR Oi NI'ISAMES. On the motion of tho Chairman, seconded by Mr Pirret, the clork (Mr A. H. Tapper) was appointed luspecter of Nuisances.
TIIE ROAIiP SOLVENT The Chairman stated that he desired to correct a report that had appeared in the " Times" to the effect that if no loan money was secured the Board would not be able to meet liabilities entered into. He assured members that the Board had been very careful iu not letting more work than they were able to finance. It was the opinion or the Finance Committee that it was undesirable to take up too much , loan money at tho present time owing to labour difficulties but as a result of the visit he had arranged to pay to Wellington he hoped to be able to secure a small portion of the sanctioned loan.
