WOMEN'S PATRIOTIC LEAGUE.
Pukekohe Branch. A meeting of the Pukekohe branch of the Women's Patriotic League was held in the Borough Council Chambers on February 14th. Present: Miss Webster (in the chair), Mesdaines Hogan, Stuart, Mcltae, O'Connor and Miss Graham. A letter was read from the Soldiers' Farewell Committee thanking the League for their donation. Letters of acknowledgment and thanks from the Secretary of the Auckland League, for a parcel of knitted comforts and 50 sanitary shirts, were also read. Iu response to an appeal the League has undertaken to mako 50 hussifs monthly and to supply fillings for same at a cost of 8d each for a further period of 12 months.
Accounts amounting to £5 0s lOd were passed for payment. A circular latter from the Mayoress of Auckland was read describing the various branches of the League's work. In thanking the League for their ready support and generous gifts of the past year, Mrs Gunson says : "If this is to be ' Victory Year ' it will be necessary to lay aside personal tastes and pleasures and even to a large extent the ordinary work of life in one strong national effort to end the war. The part of women, thongh necessarily subservient, is no mean one, and we feel sure that the share of the women of the Province, as represented in our League, will be faithfully done to this end."
Miss Webster reported that the Dominion Gifts for February totalled 286.
In Miss Usher's absence Mrs Turner attended on behalf of the Sewing Committee and reported having sent to Auckland the monthly parcel of 50 sanitary shirts and haying distributed the next month's supply to workers. Mrs Stuart reported forwarding a case of books to Auckland and also receiving a donation of a large parcel of magazines from Mrs H. Appleby, of Maungatawhiri. Mrs Baxter reported having sent a parcel of knitted comforts, containing 17 caps, 8 pairs of sox, 4 scarves and 14 pairs of mittens, to Auckland. Her application for a further supply of wool was granted. Two new members were elected, viz., Mrs Papesch and Miss F. Moore.
Donations were reported as follows Mrs Barter 10s 6d, Mrs J. B Brown jnr. 7s 6d, a friend Is, Mrs Goldsworthy snr. one cap, and £2 4s 91 from the Aka Aka Sunday School (through Mrs S. P. Henry) for the Belgian Fund. List of workers : —Caps : Mrs Maxwell 4 caps, Mrs Crum and Miss F. Moore 3 each ; Mrs Hooey and Miss I. Brown 2 each; Mesdames A. E. Taylor, Thornell, W. T. Jones, R. S. T. Moore, Misses Galloway and Kimber one each. Scarves : Misses Goldsworthy 2, Barbar, Mrs G. Brown one each. Socks : Mrs R. S. T. Moore 3 piir, Mrs Grigor 2 pair, Mesdames Cooper, Barter, Mcßae, Kimber, Boase, Misses Bowden and Hay, one pair each. Mittens : Mrs Cowperwaite (Mt. Eden) 14 pairs. It was reported that acknowledgments from recipients of Gift Parcels had been received by the following:— Mra E. Stevenson (2), Mrs Hunniford (2nd), Mrs Penny snr, Mrs Onyon, Mrs F. Duncan, Miss Routly, Miss L Perkins, Miss Pollock, Mr C. K. Lawrie, and Mr P. Hogan (Christmas parcel).
