The Defence Department authorities in Auckland do not appear to be conversant with local conditions or more correctly speaking with circumstances in the country districts. More than one local applicant for exemption has received notice to appear before the Medical Bjard at a later date and hour than he was instructed to attend before the Board.
The possibility of a variation of a ceitain verbal arrangement entered into some years ago by Cr Flanagan, as r presenting the Drury riding, and the then member for the Hunua riding (Mr Campbell) tor a bound ary road between the two ridings to receive special attention from Cr Flanagan was neatly gummed up by Cr B. Lyons at the meeting of the Franklin County Council yesterday. " With Cr Flanagan (be said) it is all right. But if another King arises who knows not 1 Joseph ' there may be trouble. A serious accident befell Mr M. McCabe, of Ararimu, whilst he was in Pukekohe on Tuesday afternoon. Mr McCabe was riding out of the New Zealand Loan Company's saleyards, where he had left his horse, when the animal took fright and the rider was thrown against a fence with great force The services of Pr Wake were quickly summoned and he found that Mr McCabe was suffering from concussion of the brain and had also sustained severe farial injuries The wounds having ban treated, the unfortunate man was taken by rail to the Auckland Hospital.
A Pukekohe farmer, who despite being ou the " prohibited " list was convicted at the Magistrate's Court a fortnight ago for having quaffed " the flowing bowl " at the recent opening of Messrs Dalgety and Company's new saleyards at Tuakau, was called upon in the Magistrate's Court yesterday to defend a charge that at the Pukekohe Show last Saturday ho did both enter the licensed booth end did obtain liquor. The accused admitted standing within the precincts of the booth but denied that he had quenched his tliiret therein Con stable Taylor, however, gave evidence to the effect that the prohibited ono had indulged to such an oxtent that he was "staggering" and Sergt. Cowan mentioned that the man's wife had complained of his condition and of his absence from homo for two days Tho Magistrate (Mr F. V. Frazer S.M.) admonished the delinquent and in lining him £2 and is costs gave him definite warning that the next time he erred he would for cortain be given a year's Bojouru on liotoroa Island.
Recent enlistments at the Pukekohe Defence Office are—Messrs. W. A. Preston (Puni) and E P. Pellow (Onewhe o). Mr J. F. Deane, hon. secretary of the Pukekohe Patriotic Committee, acknowledges the receipt for the Belgian Fund of the burn of £3, the proceeds of a dance held by " the Girls of Buckland "
The attention of intjrestsd parties is drawn to a sale of household furniture and effects to be carried out by Messrs J. T. Steinbridge and Co. on Tuesday next at the residence at the junction of Manukau Road and Harris Street, Pukekohe, of Mr F. W. Mountjoy, who is leaving the district. Particulars will be found in an advt.
An autumn flower show, with exhibition of home industries, is being promoted by the Pukekohe Branch of the Women's Patriotic League and is to be- held next month. The hon. secretary is Mrs J. M Baxter and having regard to its worthy object ready support should be accorded to the undertaking. The Rev. W. J. Comrie, of Wellington, is at present on a visit to his relatives at Pukekohe Ea*t. On Sunday he will preach at the Harvest Thanksgiving Service at Pukekohe East Chu-ch and in the evening at St James Church, Pukekohe, taking for his subject " Faithful unto Death."
The guessing competitions at last week's Pukekohe show have resulted as follows :—Cow (actual weight 5281b5; : Winner, F. Pratt (Ponsonby) guessed 5271b5; J. Slater (Pukekohe) 5251b«, 2nd ; V. Papesch, 5321b5, 3rd. —Three sheep (actual weight 2221b5) : Correct weight guessed by G. Ingram (Rama Rama), winner; D. C. Ingram (Rama Rama), 221Jlbs, 2nd ; W. M. Reynolds (Pukekohe) 2211b5, 3rd. - Pig (actual weight 21 OAlbs) : Prize shared by F. W. Kavanagh (Patumahoe) and W. London (Bombay), who each guessed 210lbs ; D. McAlpine (Patumahoe) 208 Albs, 3rd. At the instance of the Government statisician, a labourer, named Peter Fraser, of Whangarata, was charged at the Pukekohe Magistrate's Court yesterday with that being a reservist under the Military Service Act, 1916, he had failed to notify his change of address. The case for the prosecution was that the defendant had removed to Onewhero from Whangarata without notifying the Government Statistician The defcniant pleaded not guilty and whilst admitting that he had been working at Onewhero stated that he lived in a tent there and claimed that his home was at Whangarata with his brother, with whom he had a joint interest in a small farm. With few exceptions, he slid, he returned to Whangarata every weekend and further was there for extended periods. Moreover his postal address was Whangarata and any correspondence was sent on to him if lie was awav. The Magistrate F. V. Frazer S.M ). after pointing out that the Act did not define a •' place of abode " expressed regret that tho defendant should liavo boen brought to Court and he dismissed the charge.
