J Warrant Officer Hatt, at present in charge of the Pukekohe Military District, has been appointed Musketry Staff Officer fjr the Auckland Province, with heaqduarters at Auckland, in succession to Captain Wallmgford transferred to irentham Warrant Officer Hatt's new appointment carries with it the rank of First Lieutenant on the New Zealand Staff Corps. The gallant officer, it will be remembered, served with the rank of Lieutenant at Uallipoli, where he was wounded, and on bis return to the Dominion he on bis own request resumed his former duties at Pukekohe.
A pleasing ceremony took place last IhursJav morning at the Pukekohe District High School, when Mr F. Perkms, as chairman of the School Committee, presented to the successful pupils the Proficiency Certificates gained at the recent examinations. As already stated, out of fourteen scholars wh3 presented themselves for examination thirteen gained Proficiency and one competency. Tbis is indeed a good record and a great credit is due to Mr W. M. Barton, the late teacher, who coached the scholars so well under the supervision of the headmaster, Mr D. K. Flavell. Mr Perkins, in presenting the Certificates, complimented the winners on their success, and gave them some good advice as to continuing hard with their studies. The headmaster also complimented tha boys on tbeir attainments, and alluded to the tact that their success was an honour not only to themselves but to their school. Mr Flavell paid tribute to the chairman ?nd members of the Scbo3l Committee, who took such a deep interest in the scholars and educational matters generally. Allusion was also made to the success gained in the Secondary Department—due to the excellent work done by Miss Freeman. Most of those who obtained the proficiency Cerificates will be continuing their education in the Secondary Departfent, which is already overcrowded. The staff expected at the opening of the term to enrol Hbout 50 scholars, but they found 75 awaiting admission, and as a result the Oddfellows' Hall had to be rtquistioned for a temporary ecbool. There is every probability that ere long new ' school buildings will have to be erected with a staff ot four or five teachers necessary tu carrv on the School work successfully. Pukekobe is to be congratulated on its educational advancements.
