WAIROA ROAD BOARD.
Monthly Meeting.
The monthly meeting of the ' Wairoa Road Board was held last Thursday at when there were present: Messrs A, D. Bell (chairman), J. Luke, W. Duder, J. Walsh and J. McConaughey, with the clerk (Mr A. E. Bailey). MATAITAI ROAD DEVIATION. The Board's solicitors (Messrs Johnston, Coates and F<-e) wroie enclosing plan of this deviation and suggested a resolution to be passed relative to the deviation.—lt was resolved that the ptan be passed, and the resolution was adopted as suggested. NOXIOUS WEEDS. A letter was read from Mr J. W. Gilchrist (Papakura) asking that noxious weeds on the old Wairoa road adjoining his property should be cleared. —It was decided to notify the owners to have their property cleared, otherwise proceedings would be taken. BERTHAGE CHARGES. Mr F. J. Ramband (Birkenhead) wrote complaining of the berthage charge at the Ulevedon wharf for his boat "Lena," and asking for some consideration. He considered a charge of 2s 6d per trip would be sufficient as against 5s as now.—The letter was received. a workman's insurance. A letter was read from the South British Insurance Co., Ltd., relative to the claim by the Board in respect of the Board's Foreman (Mr Peterson). It was stated that a progress payment would be made on a doctor's certificate being supplied. OTAU DOMAIN. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote that the Department held the sum of 10s 6d for rent received by the Otau Domain taken over by the Board. The clerk was instructed to apply to the Department for particulars of the rent. GOVERNMENT AS OFFENDERS. The Commissioner of Crown Lands wrote relative to the clearing of blackberry from a strip of Crown land adjoining the Wairoa river, and stating that material for spraying would be supplied if tho Board could provide a suitable man to do the work. —lt was reported that this had now been attended to by the Department. SUPPLY OF METAL An offer was received from Messrs McCallum Bros., of Auckland, to supply metal at 6s 9d per yard landed. On the motion of Mr Duder, seconded by Mr McConaughey, it was resolved to accept the offer, Mr Luke to see the firm with regard to shingle. WATER SUPPLY. The Managing Director (Mr H. E. Pacey) of the N Z. Dairy Association wrote that at a meeting of the butterfat producers of the Clevedon district reference was made to the difficulty experienced in connection with water supply in the township, and a suggestion was put forwerd that a connection should be secured with the springs upon the reserve for general use. A resolution, the writer added, was carried asking the Board to collect data, and, if practicable, lay j pipes so that the township should have an adequate supply of suitable water. It was stated that Mr Blake (the Association's manager at Cleve--1 don) would be prepared to assist the Board if necessary. The chairman explained that this letter had been sent as the result of the conference, but it would be necessary to ascertain later on those who were dis-satisfied with the water [ supply in the township. The question of cost would also have to be considered. It was proposed by the chairman seconded by Mr McConaughey that a reply should be sent that the Board would obtain information as to the best means to be adopted and would ascertain the feelings locally with regard to water supply. DRAIN OBSTRUCTION. A letter was received from Mr L. H. Keals, of Clevedon road, Papakura, drawing attention to the condition of the water channel on the northern side of the Clevedon road near his property. He pointed out that serious damage had been done to his lands during the recent floods and he drew special attention to the state of tho main drain. The clerk was instructed to ascertain the facts and to notify the defaulting owners. Mr J. E. Holiday wrote to a similar effect and pointed out that noxious weeds and the rubbish prevented the tlow of water.—lt was decided to inform him that the owners would be notified to clear the creek of weeds. DOG REGISTRATION. Some discussion took place as to the fees to bo charged by the Board ftfr dog registration and Mr Duder gave notice that at the next mooting ho would move a resolution on the point. NORTH ROAD. According to notice given at the last meeting Mr Walsh brought forward a motion that Notth road should be a county road. This provoked somo discussion but Mr Duder formally seconded the motion although he had ascertained
that most of the settlers were agaiusi the proposal. Mr McConaughey expressed himself as against the ilea stating that if more money were needed the Board could raise a special rate if necessary. The chairman mentioned that the reason why he supported the proposal was that he regarded the merging of all Road Boards as only a matter of time. Mr Duder paid he would agree to anything if better roads could be provided. It was ultimately agreed to allow the motion to lapse for the present. brown's briioe. The chairman reported that a tender for the erection of the concrete bridge had been accepted and he koped the work would be proceeded with at an eaily date. The present bridge, he said, had boen temporarily repaired.
