BUCKLAND.
FARMEKS AND THE WAR. A meeting < f the Farmers' Union was held in the hall last Saturday when a large amount of business was dealt with. An acknowledgement was received from the Belgian Consul for eggs sent for the Belgian Relief Fund. A discussion took place on the land settlement scheme for returned soldiers put forward by the Union Executive and the following resolutions were carried, viz : " That this meeting agrees with the scheme as far as inexperienced men are concerned, but considers some othf-r scheme is required for experienced farmers and submits the following proposal • That the Government should propound a scheme whereby farmers who enlist should be able, if they so desire, to submit their farms for sale to the Government, such farms to be utilised for the settlement of returned soldiers, who have had previous experience in farming '" and " That we urge upon the Government the necessity of conscripting all labour to carry on essential industries, and that all retired farmers ineligible for active service, be appointed to manage the farms of those who have enlisted." Two new members were elected
The inaugural meeting of the Young People's Guild, was held on Tuesday evening at Mr F. Souster's residence, when a large number were present and a very enjoyable evening was spent The following were elected as officers for the ensuing year, viz , Rev J B. Suckling, president; Mr Avery, Mrs Avery and Mrs Melville, vice-presidents; Miss Avery, secretary; Miss G. Neal, treasurer.
