FRANKLIN A. AND P. SOCIETY.
The Coming Show. At a meeting of the General Committee of the Franklin A. and F. Society, held on Friday last, there were preeent: Messrs C. K. Lawrie (president), J. Schlaepfer, F. Ballard, J. N. Massev, F. Perkins, J. Wylie, A. P. Daysh, W. Sharp, D. K. Hamilton and J. H. Webb, with the secretary (Mr J. M. Baxter). A letter was read from the N.Z Council of Agriculture enclosing a copy of the Prime Minister's reply relative to representations made for the exemption of showgrounds from local rates. The executive recommended the various associations to apply to the local authorities for the remission of rates. If the Franklin Society made such application they asked to be iuformed of the result of such application.—The matter was left to the secretary to be dealt with.
A letter was read from Mr F. P. Langford (Runciman) enclosing 10s 6d, which as a member of the Auckland Show he considered the fee to be paid. Unless the Association accepted such fee he asked for the same to be returned.—The chairman remarked that as the new subscription rate was fixed at a guinea they could not accept 10s 6d, as all members had to be treated alike.—Mr Ballard thought that some amendment should be made on the lines of the Auckland Society.—Mr Hamilton agreed with Mr Ballard, and pointed out that a reduced subscription was only accepted when a member subscribed to another association. —On the motion of the chairman, it was agreed to return the 10s 6d with a letter of explanation. The Franklin County Council wrote forwarding a communication from the Department of Agriculture suggesting the formation of a local committee of agriculture.—On the suggestion of Mr Hamilton it was agreed that the County Council ought to be the committee.
With regard to the engagement of a band for the show a view was expressed that owing to the small amount of funds in hand a band should be dispensed with. Mr Perkins and others thought that if no band were engaged it would affect the attendance.—After discussion it was resolved on the motion of Mr Wylie seconded by Mr Massey that a band be engaged and that a committee consisting of the chairman, Mr Webb and the secretary be appointed to make the necessary arrangements.
It was decided to call for tenders for supplying green feed for stock at the show, and the secretary to arrange the carting.
On the motion of the chairman a vote of condolence was passed with the family of the late Mr Joseph Penman who had for many years been a resident in the district and a valued member of the society. it was thought that a smoke conceit should be again arranged for on the night of the show. The chairman considered that such a gatuering served to advertise the show and to preserve the friendship between members and visitors. It was decided to hold the next meeting on Friday the 16th inst. to make final arrangements for the show.
