Manurewa Town Board.

JTO THE EDITOR.] Sir,—l would like to reply to the aspersion cast on the intelligence of the ratepayers of the Manurewa Town District by the Chairman of the Town Board (Mr J. T. Corin) bj his statement in your issue of January 23 rd, that a public meeting of ratepayers was called and forced forward by one who is not a rate* payer and that he would not tolerate any outside interference from any* one, especially from those who are not ratepayers. The interpretation of this, I conclude, is that in the estimation of the chairman the ratepayers are on a par with hie followers whom he now controls on the Board, and that it is the fault of an outsider that quite a large number of the ratepayers should be herded away from his authority and gathered together into another fold. Bight here and now I would strongly advise Mr Corin to cut " aping the Tammany Boss " for neither he if nor I am in the financial position to make a success of it.

My connection in the matter is that at a Progressive League meet* iog held just previously, at which Mr Corin was present, the subject of the Town Board paying out a sum of money unnecessarily was die* cussed. The outcome was that a committee was formed to convene a meeting of ratepayers to raise a protest against the action of the Board. Mr Corin was well aware of this unless his memory of what takes place at a meeting is some* what short Being secretary of the Progressive League, I was naturally asked to prepare the notices of the meeting and have them posted up. The only force p used was the difficulty in having the meeting made public on account of the action of the Chairman of the Manurewa Town Board in pulling down the notice from the notice board that usually is used i'jr the purpose of notification of meetings etc. From what I can gather, the information Mr Corin received of the meeting wis gained by himself and a friend on separate occasions, by augumentative conversation with two persons whom he states were present. Therefore it is not to be wondered at if it is not correct. All the names of the ratepayers present were not supplied ; neither is it true that it took a quarter of an hour to find a seconder to any resolution.—l am, etc., M. H. ORAM. Manurewa, January 26th, 1917.
