LOCAL AND GENERAL.
An advt. appears in this issue relative to the striking of a rate by by the Pukekohe Drainage Board. Notice is given by advt. in this issue by the Franklin County Council that proceedings will be taken against all persons in arrear with their rates after February 28th. The Franklin County Council, who adjourned for a holiday period, will resume their ordinary monthly meetings on Thursday of next week, Feb. Ist.
The Railway Department announce the issue of tickets at excursion fares for Monday next (Anniversary Day). A special train is also to run from Auckland to Te Aroha and back. For particulars see advt.
An elocutionary recital is to be given by the Rev J. B. Suckling in the Premier Hall, Pukekohe, on Tuesday, February 6th. Mr Ernest Drake, of Aucklaud, will also be a contributor to the programme. Messrs W. and R Fletcher, Ltd., of the Westfield Freezing Works, notify farmers by advt. in this issue that for the present owing to unexpected labour trouble they have discontinued buying pigs.
The N.Z. Farmers' Co-op. Bacon and Meat Packing Coy , Ltd , will be buying pigs next week as follows, viz: on Monday at Patumahoe, on Tuesday at Pukekohe, on Wednesday at Buckland, and on Thursday at Pokeno.
The Farmers' Union Trading Coy. of Auckland announce by advertisement in this if sue that they have decided to open a produce store at Pukekohe and are prepared to consider the purchase of a suitable section where a railway siding could be used.
Mr J. F. Deane, hon. sec of the Pukekohe Patriotic Committee, acknowledges the receipt of the following donations to the Belgian Relief Fund, viz.: Mrs S. P. Henry ss, Aka Aka Sunday School 2s, W. J. A. Moore £3 3s, W. Goldsworthy £1 Is.
Messrs Alfred Buckland and Sons are to bold their first sheep and ram fair for the season in the Tuakau sale yards on Monday, February oth, when the yarding will include 8000 ewes, wethers and lambs and 50 rams. For particulars see advt. Mr B. G-. Greenwood's (Pukekohe East) trotting horse, St. Trella, sustained a severe laceration of the frog of one of its hind feet this week as the result of treading on broken glass and its training work is accordingly likely to be temporardy suspended.
One of the coincidences of Mr Massey's visit to Belfast in November was the fact that in his call at the Royal Victoria Hospital in the city he found amongst its inmates one of his own constituents, Sergeant William Batty, son of Mr J Batty, of Karaka, Runciman, a personal friend of the Prime Minister. Sergeant Batty had been wounded in the advance on the Somnio a few weeks earlier. A Belfast paper states that besides chatting with Sergeant Batty Mr Massey addressed encouraging words to a young private named Pross, whose home is in Tasmania, and that the patients enthusiastically cheered the smiling Prime Minister before he left.
At the sitting of the Military Service Appeal Board on Wednesday at Hamilton, Mr Eliot, a member of the Board, referring to some of the appellants, stated that this was a strenuous time when sacrifice was called for, for they manifested a determination to get the uttermost farthing. Many poor fellows had to make great sacrifices in order to go, but others claimed consideratiou because of the amount of their property. It was really these men who had the most at stake, and who should be prepared to defend it. In another case, in which the appellant was concerned in hnd aggregating over 1100 acres, valued roughly at £17,000, Major Conlan expressed the opinion that it was "worth lighting for." With this tho appellant concurred, and stated that "were he working for another man ho would go." Ho is going as it is. The unsold lots of the old showground, Pukekoho, are to be sub mitted to auction on tho ground by Messrs Alfred Buckland and Sous on Wedueslay, February 11th. The sections constitute ideal residential sites, and they are to be offered for sale absolutely withuut reserve iu order to relieve tho Fruuklin A. and P. Society of further liability in rogard to the same. Purchasers therefore are given the opportunity of (acuring valuable investments at their own prices.
