MERCER.
(See also Page 1.) WAIKATO EIVER BOAED. THE AKA AKA CLAIM. A meeting of the River Board was held on Saturday, the members present being : Messrs Glass (chairman), Gallery, Cronin, Lapwood and Pendergast, together with the clerk (Mr Hallett). It was resolved to lease the Board's plant for £4 10s per week to the Waikato Shipping Co., Ltd, the plant to be kept in thorough order and to be returned when required. With respect to the threatened action against the Board by the Aka Aka Drainage Board, in which a claim had been made for £4500 for alleged damage to drainage works, it was decided to defend the same to the utmost, a sum of £2OO being promised in the room, and more if necessary. It was reported that arrangements were being made for a syndicate to buy the dredge so that it should be perfectly free from Government control. Mr E. Hallett complained that the new wharf was being put in front of his houses. He pointed out that the Board had no jurisdiction over that portion of the frontage, as it was given to the Railway Department forty years ago, the Board therefore having no control of the same. —The chairman claimed the right to deal with the frontage, but said he had pointed out to the United Timber Co. when giving consent that no timber could be stacked on the wharf. Accounts passed for payment were as follows: Lapwood Bros, (piles) £9 18s 2d, wages £3 10s. Dairying is fast increasing through the district where the beautiful Waikato river wends its way, and when one recalls the facilities offered for the conveyance of dairy and other produce by the Waikato Shipping Co., Ltd., it ia not surprising to find that farmers take advantage of this mode of conveyance. The Waikato Dairy Co. report a better season than last year, large supplies coming from as far away as Clevedon, whilst Onehunga sends a good supply, together with Awhitu, Orua Bay and Pollok. There is a steadily increasing quantity of cream coming to hand from all the places served by river.
