A meeting of interested parties was held tn the Pukekohe Borough Council Chambers laat evening tor the purpose of furthering the movement for a poll of electors to be taken on the half-holiday question. Mr J. T. Stembridge was voted to the chair, and he explained that the petition that has been promoted was simply to ask the Council to arrange for a poll ot el°ctors to be held in accordance with the provisions of the Shops and Offices Act, thereby removing the onuß of the selection of the day from the Council. Mr Stembridge mentioned that the petition in no way advocated one day or another and that it would be for the respective advocates of rival factions to subsequently put lurward their views on that point. Mr A. Grant was appointed to take charge of the petition and tu arrange and to obtain signatures thereto.—lt may b3 mentioned that although a tormal selection of the date of the halfholiday will in compliance with the Act be made by the Council next Wednesday, such choice will be superseded, by the result of the poll when taken. The poll will also mean that instead of the matter coming before the Council every year that the day determined on by the electors will continue in operation until altered by any subsequent poll.
