A shopwalker in a large business establishment, who had unenviable reputation for his severity to the assistants under his supervision, one day stepped up to one of the staff iwho had been engaged for some time at tha counter with a lady who had departed without making any purchase. •You let that lady leave without makin" anv purchase?" he snid angri'Yes, sir, T began the meefclooking' assistant: but the other interrupted. "And she was at your counter fully ten minutes?" " Yes, sir. But you face " 'Exactly! I saw that few of the questions she put to you were answered and you never attempted to get what she wanted." "Well but " 'You n?ed not make excuses. I shall report you for neglect of duty." •• But I hadn't what she wanted." "What was that?" '•Five shillings. She was from my temperance society, canvassing-for. subscriptions!" A sentimental editor asks, "Are ther anv sweeter words in the English language than those of 'I love you'?" Perhaps not: but the words "What will vou have?" are not lacking in dorp ent and delightful enunciation.
