BOWLING CLUB'S AT HOME

A Patriotic Gathering* For the purpose of assisting the funds of the Pukekohe Military Farewell Committee, an At Home was held on Saturday afternoon on the Pukekohe Bowling Club's green. The attend tnce was exceadingly large, and the gathering was in every way one of the most successful social functions that has ever taken place in Pukekohe. With ideal summer weather pr the green with its floral background and moving cowl of members of ei'her sex presented a chirming panorama, a disp'ay of bunting rendering the ell'ect all the more brilliant. The tea tables were most artistic ally decorated, the ladies in charge of the same being MesdameJ Perkins, Lawrie, Grigor, Barter, Armstrong, D Roulston and M Wright. Many other ladies also rendered active assistance.

A sale of patriotic badges was carried out by the Misses M. Lawrie, E. Weston and J. Blake, and roses, presented by the Rev. 8 Nixon, were sold by Miss Linda Armstrong. During the proceedings Mr F. Perkins, as the president of the Club, said a few words of welcome to the visitors, and claimed that the large assembly testified to the Bowling Club being a very live institution iu Pukekohe and also to a worthy determination to help a deserving cause.

Mr E. Allan briefly referred to the object of the gathering, pointing out that it was the duty of the '' home " community to recognise what the young men were giving up when they went forth to meet dangers and trials and to see that they were sent away with gladdened hearts and with the knowledge that if they fell in the fight their dependants would be adequately cared for. Mr (J. X. Lawrie, on behalf of the Military Farewell Committee, of which he is chairman, expressed appreciation of the Bowling Club's act in assisting the Committee's work.

The proceeds of the gathering totalled £l7 8s Bd, including a cheque for £] Is received from the Hon. A. M. Myers, M.P., who wrote regretting inability to be present. A series of mixed foursome games (seven heads) was played with the following results, viz: Luxford, Mrs Arms trong, Mrs D. Roulston and Fitness lost to Gribble, Mrs Grigor, Mrs Barter and W. Baker 6—7.

F. Hubbard, Mrs Stuait, Mrs Lawrie and J. G. Russell beat J. Adams, Mrs Perkins, Mrs Mills and W. Blake 8 —7.

J Fausett, Mrs Webb, Miss Ramsay and J. Roulston beat A. F. Brown, Mrs Bowden, Mrs Tonge and G. Armstrong 7—3. A. 0. Woollett, Mrs Boyce, Mrs Woollatt and J. Adams beat A. P. Daysh, Miss Weston, Mrs Crispe and J. T. Hewson 12—4.

H. W. King, Mrs Fitness, Miss Ramsay and F. Perkins drew Blackwood, Mrs Baker, Mrs Butcher, and M. Wright 4—4. Potter, Mrs Keith, Miss Bilkey and D. JRoulston beat R. F Webster, Mrs Lawson, Miss Blake and O'Loughlen.
