LONDON WAR MARRIAGES.
A further striking incraese in London's marriage-ate is recorded in the report of the County Medical Officer of Health for 1915. The number of weddings registered in that yeinr was the largest on record, tiro, total lieing •>',3'>4, compared with 43.373 in the previous year, and -11.409 in 1913. An increase over the 1914 figures was ohservahle in each quarter of the year
Dr. Hamer remarks that the calculation of a marriage-rate is attended wtili some difficulty, owing to the fact that the estimated "civil population"' cannot be used i'or the j)ui'i>ose. faking, however, a probable population of '.voOO.lh'O, the rate becomes 2-VII per 10(!<), which is higher than that recorded in any previous year. The marriagerate has shown a slight rise annualh" since 190S, the figures for 1914 being 19.2 against 1G.9 in 1909.
In Dr. Hamer's opinion, the bulk of the increase last year must be directly attributed to the war. He adds that there is reason fo.- thinking that a considerable number of these marriages nnv not belong to the I.ondon pepul it-ion, since, while the metropolitan iigur\s rose to 34 per cent., the corresponding increase for the rest of England aird Wales was only 20 p. r cent.
