RANGIRIRI.
A DESTRUCTIVE FIRE. On Tuesday morning early a fire occurred at Rangiriri in 'an iron building owned by Mr J. C. Gerrand, and used as a general store by Messrs J. Robertson and Co. The outbreak was first noticed by a man residing at the hotel, who raised an alarm. After visiting the premises to ascertain the locality of the fire he notified Mr Robertson, who resides some distance from the store. Although various persons were quickly on the spot it was found nothing' could be done in the way of salvage, as a strong northerly wind was blowing and the ilames had'complete possession of both building and contents, which were entirely destroyed, including mail matter and telephone instruments connected with the post office, for which purpose the building was also used. The latter was insured with the National Company for £9O, and the general stock owned by Messrs Robertson and Co., and unfortunately estimated at between £7OO and £BOO in value, was covered with the National Company also to the extent of £4OO. The cause of the fire is at present unknown, Mr Robertson having himself left the premises secure at 8 p.m. on Monday when closing
