PAPAKURA.
MOTOR CAE ACCIDENT. As briefly recorded in our Tuesday's issue, Mr S L. Bygrave, proprietor of the Papakura Hotel, met with a serious accident on Monday evening last through the bursting of a tyre of a motor car in which he was travelling The car was owned and was driven by Mr H. Lloyd, its other occupants, in aldition to Mr Bygrave, being Messrs E M Gillespie and J. McKenzie. The party were returning home after a trip to Auckland, Mesws Bygrave anl McKenzie occupying the back seat and Mr Gillespie sitting alongside Mr Lloyd in front. As the car was traversing the bridge at Takanini the tyre of one of the back wheels blew out, causing it to swerve and to strike one of the rails of the bridge. Mr L'oyd promptly applied the brake but with a sudden stop occurring Mr Bygrave was precipitated out on to the road aud Mr McKenzie's head struck the hand rail at the back of the front seat. The latter was rendered unconscious as the result of the impact, and when picked up Mr Bygrave was found to have sustained serious injuries to his head and was also unconcious. He wis placed in Mr Lloyd's car. which was driven in its disabled condition on towards Takanini station, from which place •Dr Brookfield was summoned from Papakura. A passing motor car was appealed to for assistance, but strange to say after slowing up it continued on without its occupants rendering any help. On Dr Brookfiald's arrival by motor car he saw that Mr Bygrave was suffering from concussion of the brain and still in a comatose condition he was conveyed to the Papakura Hotel, together with Mr McKenzie, by Mr H. Markwich, who hearing of the mishap drove out in his car from Papakura. At the hotel the injured men were skilfully treated by Dr Brookfield, Mr McKenzie having in the meantime regained consciousness. Mr Bygrave, however, remained in an unsensible state and with little improvement being apparent the following day (Tuesday) he was removed in the afternoon to a private hospital in Auckland, where according to latest reports, although his condition is still critical, he is showing some sign of improvement
A euchre party and dance, arranged by the 70th Co. (Papakura) Senior Cadets, was held in the Parish Hall on Friday evening of last week. The winners of the euchre tournament were Mrs I. Mack 1 and Miss M. Johnston 2, and Mr Rowe 1 and Mr C. Tuply 2. The music for the dance was supplied by Mrs H. Walters and Miss Hibbard, with Mr Bowe as M.C. The Cadets went to no end of trouble to improve the appearance of the hall, and with a fine display of evergreens and bunting that end was attained. The proceeds of the function, amounting to £2 Bs, will be devoted to the provision of shooting trophies for the Cadets. A strong re-organisel committee has been formed, with the Rev. W. C. Wood as chairman and Mr Tuely continuing as secretary and treasurer, to farewell soldiers who are on final leave before going to the front. The previous socials have -been so successful that the chairman and committee are asking for the continued support of the ladies and others who so generously provided refreshments. ♦
