THE BISHOP'S BOAST.
"ONE OF THE HEALTHIEST MEN IN LONDON TO-DAY." "The statement that an unmarried man cannot lead a moral life and bo healthy is a devil's lie. At fifty-eight years of age, unmarried, and having led a moral life, I am one of the healthiest men in London to-day." The Bishop of London made this statement on Tower Hill last month, when he addressed a meeting in connection with the National Mission of Repentance and Hope. Dr. Ingram met with some opposition during the meeting, and was repeatedly heckled. His subject was whether the war was an argument against a good God. "I am often asked," he said "why God does not stop the war, and does the war represent the breakdown of Christianity. My answer to that is that it is not a war Between Christian nations. Germany is not a Christian nation at all, although there are many Christians in that country. If a nation is determined to have a war, as Germany was, God is not going *0 stop it. If a man is determined to go to the devil he can go his owft way." When the bishop was asked how many curates were shirking their duty, he referred to a chaplain' who saved seven men by smothering a> bomb whioh was about to explode. "That is the answer to the people who say our clergy are cowards," said Dr. Ingram. He added that he argued for four hours in favour of clergymen being allowed to enlist, but he iwas defeated. "What are you going to do at home?" asked the bishop later. "The same as the parsons," replied n man in the crowd.
