MANUREWA.

MANUREWA TOWN BOARD The usual monthly meeting of the Manurewa Town Board was held last Thursday the members present being: Messrs T. J. Coriu (chairman), E. a. Pegler, C. Coxhead, H. V. Burton, C. H. Lup*on with the clerk Mr A. G. Mabee. JELLICOE ESTATE. Messrs Robertson and Spedding, (Auckland), part owners of the Jellicoe Estate requested information reporting the roading conditions applicable to the proposed roading of that estate. On the proposal of Mr Lupton, seconded,by Mr Burton, it was decided that first class conditions should be made to apply to Jellicoe road and extension to the station, all the other roads to come under the conditions governing second class roads.—Mr Pegler refrained from voting on the subject. aciLL ROAD A request that second class conditions should be made apply to Hill road, from Mr Nathan's boundary to the boundary of thePapakura Valley Road District, was forwarded by the Furiri Park Estate, Limited. The chairman understood that incorporated in the request was a desire to have several conditions eliminated fro>n tbe roading conditions. Messrs Lupton and Burton failed to see how sucn could be done without granting the same concession to others. The chairman advised" adherence to the conditions in lespect to the portion of the road in the Town District as it carried heavy traffic. On tbe proposal of the chairman, seconded by Mr Coxhead, it was resolved that the road would have to be formed according to the first-class conditions. Mr Pegler refrained from voting. A PROJECTED IMPROVEMENT. In reply to a communication fiom the Board asking for an agreement whereby no compensation would be claimed in respect to any daifiage that may occur to his property in connection with the proposed cutting down of a hill on Hill road, in front of his property, Mr D. L. Nathan said that he would be pleased to consider any proposal that might come forward, accompanied with plans

The chairman advised that he had inspected the locality and was convinced that it was a necessary work, which would have to be accomplished in the very near future. He suggested that arrangements might be nude with the Puiiri Park Estate, Ltd., to do it when tbey were doing loading work in the vicinity. Mr Pegler reported that Mr Nathan was desirous of having an engineer to inspect the locality before any operations to cut down the bank weie put in baud. He (Mr I'ogler) suggested that as the hill in question was such that it was purely an entrance to Mr Nathan's residence and only served that purpose that it was a private road. While admitting the accuracy of Mr Pegler's contention the chairman favoured grading and cutting at the top end of the road conditionally upon the Board being given an assurance that they would not be liable for compensation, and with that in view he suggested that legal op ; nion should be obtained.

Mr Pegler intimated that Mr Nathan was desirous of meeting the Board on the site, and as members considered that the present difficulty might be accordingly overcome a proposal to that effect was submitted by Mr Lupton, and seconded by Mr Burton, and carried. SAXITATIOX. In compliance with a decision come to at a special meeting of the Papakura Town Board, that authority wrote asking the Board to join them in a sanitary service between the two district?, and suggested that a conference of delegates from bjth authorities should be h el d to consider the matter.

The chairman urged the necessity

of such an innovation, particularly as port : onß of the dis'rict were very closely settled Mr Lupton considered it worthy of the Board's best consideration.

Mr Pegler doubted whether the combination, as suggested, would be advisable.

Mr Burton explained that the contractor would only consider the two districts, as it would not pay him to cater for one on'y. A proposal that the chairman and he (Mr Lupton) should be Appointed delegates to confer with the Papakura body, was proposed by Mr Lupton, seconded by Mr Pegler, and carried unanimously. STATION ROAD. Mr 1 hos. W. Bell requested permission to use a quantity of loose soil, at present on Massey road, to cover a culvert at a proposed cart entrance to his property on Station road. As the soil in question was likely to be wanted for Town Board purposes it was agreed that applicant should be permitted to take soil from in front of the billiard siloon in Station road conditionally on the spot being left level wi'h the foot path on the opposite side of the road. —The chairman remarked that as Station road was the main approach to the township from the railway station he would like to see both sides kerbed and channelled. RATING EXEMPTION PROBLEMS. The clerk reported having obtained advice in respect to the applications for exemption of rates on the Massey Road Hall and on the Manurewa Children's Home. With respect to the hall, he said the party concerned would have to present an agreement showing that they were in possession of a six months lease of the hall and that it was being used solely for religious purposes, before the Board could legally exempt the property from rates. The conditions, he added, appertaining to the Home were not so satisfactory; in fact, the Act debarred any concession being made because the Home was neither a school, a religious institution, nor a charitable institution, while in respect to the land they could only claim exemption for four acres. The Board could, however, make a donation of one per cent of the Board's income. Before doing so, however, legal advice would have to be sought. The clerk was instructed to obtain legal advice and to notify the applicants accordingly. CLERK PRO TEM. On Mr Mabee intimating that he had received instructions from the Defence Department to proceed to Trentham Camp on the 12th December, the question of appointing a temporary clerk was gone into. On the motion of the chairman, seconded by Mr Pegler, Mr Thomas Bell was appointed to the position. CLOSING OF WEYMOUTH ROAD. As a member of the deputation appointed to make representations to the District Engineer of Railways for Weymouth Road to be opened the Chairman reported that the conference duly took plice and a reply that he would do his best to have the spirit of the request acceeded to was given by the Engineer. The Chairman further stated that he had interviewed Mr Casey, assistant Engineer, in respect to the proposed straightening of Lupton's and Weymouth Roads and had been given an assurance that both proposals would be recommended. MISCELLANEOUS. As the pre sent state of the hedge on the Post Office site formed an obstacle to a clear view of vehicles approaching from either side of the corner it was decided to request the patty responsible to attend to the matter.

The Clerk was instructed to order pipes for Lupton's and Russel's roads As the lamps ordered several weeks ago had not come to hand it was decided to request the iirm to forward them forthwith.

Mr Lupton reported that from observations he had made there were 440 people resident in the Town Board District.
