CHILDREN'S PATRIOT!') SPORTS.

As a mark of appreciation of selfsacrifice evidenced in various ways by the children of the district during these times of war an outing for the amusement of the younger generation in the form of a picnic and sports was organised by the Tuakau Patriotic League and duly eventuated on Saturday last The paddock in George street;, ownei unal recently by Mr Madill, sen , was the scene of the gathering. A heavy sky in the morning portended drastic weather conditions but a few light showers were luckily only in evidence. Under cover of canvas, afternoon tea, and confectionery and fruit was offered for sale. " Side shows," including the popular pastime of " Hit him on the ha ha," under the .supervision of Messrs J. Pirrit and T K. Patterson, who were attired in frock coats and top hats, and skittles, in charge of Mr Percy Lapwood, met with the respect that ordinarily attends such attractions. The proceeds amounting to close o i £6O, go to strengthen the funds of the League. A smart exhibition of Highland and sword dancing was given by Master Allan Cameron (Frankton Junction), assisted by Mr Gordon McLennan (Hamilton) and Miss W. Moncur (Harrisville), Mr James Whiteside, of Whangarata very skilfully supplied the bagpipe accompaniments. Another interesting item was an exhibition of flag drill by 20 pupils of the Ohewhero Public School given under the direction of the head master (Mr Bark) The tea room was under the management of Mesdames \V. G. Graham, G. Leaman, G. ReveU, Paton, W Lee, W. Smeed, Dwen, H. Maguire, P. Collins and T. Lapwood, whilst the confectionery and fruit stall was controlled by the Misses M. Myall, Frost, Rowe (2) and M. Woodbridge. The Sports' competitions resulted as follows, viz :^

The final of the tug-of-war, for boys, was a " long, long pull and a strong, strong pull," and with not much to choose between either party, viz., Onewhero and Buckland, the Onewhero boys received a great ovation on their triumph Several baby competitions were held, the respective winners being : For boys under six months : Lloyd Ripley 1, Kenneth Logan 2; 12 months, Andrew Cat hear c and Jaob Brewster tie for first place. Girls under 12 months: Martha 1, Edith Grant 2.

In a married ladies' race the competitors showed a fair turn of speed. Mrs P. Collins won, with Mrs T. Lapwood in second place.

In the- married men's race Mr H. H. D. Wily (Buckland) touched the tape first a few yards in front of Mr H. Craig. Assistance in the way of prizes, provisions and cash was given by the following: —Mesdames Butterworth, Laing, Madill, senr., Messrs J. Lapwood, A. J. Frescott, W. H. Northmore, P. H. Lapwood, W. J. At the meeting of the Franklin County Council last Wednesday Cr Wilcox referred to the suggested sale to frontage owners of one half of the two chain portion of the road running from the Tuakau Catholic Church to the Waikato River. A early start should now be made with the programme of work as provided for in the loan It is understood that something definite in the way of fortnightly sales in the district can be expected from the N.Z. Loan and M.A. Co. and Messrs Bucklaud and Sons at an early date. Mrs John English is proceeding shortly to Palmtrston North to be near her husband, Sergt.-Major English, of the New Zealand Medical Corps, who is stationed at Awapuni, somo three miles out of Palmerston North. Mrs English will probably remain away for three months . Arrangements in connection with the unveiling of the statue erected to the honour of the European soldiers who fought and died in the engagements between pakeha and Maori in the vicinity of Tuakau during the Maori War, made some time back are, after several abortive attempts to arrange with the Hon. Russell, Minister of Internal Affairs, to perform the ceremony, to be given effect to on Saturday, December 9th, the Hon. Russell having intimated that he would be free on that date to officiate. Invitations to be prepresent have been extended to Messrs R. F. Bollard and Young, M.P.'s, and to the Auckland representatives in Parliament and to the members of neighbouring local bodies.
