CLEVEDON.
A. and P. Show.
A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING,
The annual show of the Clevedon A. and P. Society held on Saturday last proved, despite showery weather, one of the most successful of the series of exhibitions held at Clevedon. The takings at the gate amounted to £3l 12s 6d or an advance of £4 12s 6d over the proceeds from the same source last year. There was also an increase in the entries," this year's total being 463, as against 424 last year. Competition was particularly keen in the cattle and horse sections, the entries for which were 29 and 20 respectively above the totals of twelve months ago. In the sheep, pigs and poultry sections, however, there was a slight falling off in each case which was accounted for by the shortage of labour on farms making it impossible for farmers to spare the time to prepare their stock for exhibition.
The Bociety started off operations at the beginning of the year with a credit balance of £3O and although a new grandstand has been purchased finances still allowed for an increase of the prize donations from £42 to £B4.
The judges were as follows: Horses, light, riding and driving, Mr J. Dalgliesh, Hamilton; Draught Horses, Mr H. Aitkenhead, Helensville; Shorthorn Cattle, Mr J. R. McElwain, Glenbrook; Holsteins, Mr E. C. Banks, Mata Mata; Jerseys, Mr A. C. Jones, Papatoetoe; Sheep, Mr C. T. Barriball, Waiuku; Pigs, Mr Jno. Wylie, Papatoetoe ; Fat and Store Cattle, Mr T. Gill, Remuera; Poultry, Mr R. P. Lugton, Maraetai. The horses were a surpreior lot to those shown last year, the hacks in particular doing well under trying conditions. A feature of the show was the cattle section, both sexes in the pedigree and grade sections of the Shorthorn and Holstein - Fresian classes showing breeding and milking qualities, while the fat and store cattle sections testified a good judgment on the part of the graziers, and the yearling steers and calves in these sections being a very nice collection. There was an absence of woolly sheep, due to the fact that .in many cases the flocks had just been shorn, but nevertheless the section as a whole was a very good exhibit, while amongst the pigs, which were sparsely represented, the " porkers " were of good quality and superior to the " baconers."
The arrangements were all that could be desiied. To Mr C. C Munro, and Mr Secretary J. A. Gandy and the committee all praise is due for the very successful issue attained.
