CHILDREN'S FAIR. A PRONOUNCED SUCCESS. Under the auspices of the Tuakau Patriotic League a Children's Fair was held in the Public Hall on Wednesday last and was attended with marked success.
The opening ceremony was perormed in the afternoon by Mrs (Dr) tfcGuire, of Auckland, in the presmce of a large assembly. In a ucid addre?s Mrs McOuire very 'orcibly referred t) the necessity of jreater efforts to provide comforts :or the "boys'" at the front, suggesting as a means, if necessary, the relinquishment of household duties. Further, she appealed to her hear9rs to put their best efforts forward so that there would be no likelihood of them suffering the same fate as had befallen i,h<>ir " sisters" in Europe In conclusion, Mrs McGuire paid tribute to the women of EDglandfor the praiseworthy manner in which they had unitedly grappled with an unprecedented position. A feature of the proceedings was the completeness of all the arrangement*. particularly the musical portion of the programme, both in the afternoon and evening. Items were rendered as follows, viz. r Songs, by Mrs (Dr) McGuire and Mrs Pilkington (Pukekohe), Messrs T. Patterson and J. Pirret; musical selections by Misses A. Geraghty (piano), C. Hodgson and A. O'Connor (violins); " pink " march by Misses A. Lewis, I, L. and E. Leaman, F. Dickens, 8. Garaghty, P. Butterworth, M Strahan and D. Irving; song and march by pupils (boys and girls) of the Tuakau school; recitations by Mrs McDougall, Misses Gladys Strahan, Muriel Butterworth, and Edna Long and the Rev J B. Suckling (Pukekohe). Mrs G. D. Hunter very painstakingly officiated at the piano. In the woodwork, freehand outline and drawing from memory sections for children a high standard of efficiency was attained. The following adjudicated, viz.: —Cookery sections, Mesdames D. Moore and J. Logan, Onewhero; woodwork, Mr J. Scott-Johnston, Pukekohe; knitted articles, Mrs Butterworth; drawing, Mrs Cruickshank and Mr L. D O'Brien; horticultural, Mrs Wily (Buckland): decorated dolls, Miss V. Webster (Pukekohe). Awards were made as follows, viz.: —Children's sections—Cookery : Plate of scones, by boy, E. Revell and A. Leaman tied for first place; best collection of cookery, Edna Graham 1 ; madeira cake, Doris Irvine 1. Woodwork, by pupils attending the Pukekohe Manual Training School: Standard VL, J. Smith 1, A. Pulman (Buckland) 2 ; Standard V., Alic Mcßae (Pukekohe) 1, R Osborne (Pukekohe) 2, Freehand outline drawing (13 years and over), Dick Cheeseman 1, Wesley Long 2; under 13 years, Ina Deeble 1, H. Laing 2. Memory drawing, under 13 years, Hazel Laing 1, Ina Deeble 2; senior pupils, A. Knowles 1, Dick Cheeseman 2. M. Maddren 3. - Adults Knitted socks, Mrs Revell 1; Balaclava cap, Miss L. Leaman 1. Dressed doll competition (for best work), Kathleen Graham 1, Ivy Lap wood 2; seniors, special prize, Edna Graham and Rita Leaman 1, Nora Cheeseman 2. Decorated basket, Ina Deeble 1, Annie Madill 2. Bouquets, Hilda Laing 1, Edna Graham 2.
Great interest was centred in the apple-eating (for boys), bun-eating (for girls) and spelling-bee competitions, the respective results being as follows, viz.: G. Govern 1, G. Laing 2 ; Doris Irvine 1, Erica Leaman and Edith Faton a tie for second place; Maud Strahan 1. Competitions held during the evening resulted as follows, viz: Nail driving for Ladies (least number of blows), Mrs Leaman. 1 ; quickest time, Mrs T. Lapwood, 1; wool winding for gentlemen, three tied for first place and in the final Mr C. Deed won; candle lighting for ladies and gentlemen, Miss Wynstandley, 1; guessing competitions, " weight of cake," Mr T. W. Lapwood, 1; peas in bottle, three tied for first place and in the " draw off" Mrs W. G. Graham won; cushion, Mrs Fioch; dolls, Mrs Butterworth and Miss Ethel Graham A handsome rimu table presented by Mr Cruickshank was won by Mrs W. H. Northmore in a guessing competition, that realised £4 lis. At the close of the proceedings Mr J. T. Stembridge, of Fukekohe, kindly held an auction sale of goods previously undisposed of. With the hall being kindly lent, free of charge, by Mr E. Kevell, a handsome profit should result, for to date the proceeds amount to £67.
The joint managament of the function was carried out by the following, viz School events, Messrs Frost, Eevell and Henderson ; boy's events, Messrs W. Graham, Patterson and J. C. Quinlan ; " Bobs," Mr Maddren; wool winding and hat-trimming events, etc., Mesdames Butterworth and Deeble; Christmas tree, Mr D. Fulton, Mesdames Lewis, Qraham, Fulton and Cruickshank; guessing competitions, Mesdames Laiog, Deeble, Hunter and Misses Woodbridge, Lewis and Bmeed; stalls, sweets, flowers and pot plants, Misses F Lewis, Rowe (2), M Mayall and L. Osborne; produce, Mesdames Frost, Free and Fulton; concert committee, Mrs Hunter, Miss Hyde, Messrs Revell, Patterson, Pirret and Northmore; doorkeepers, Messrs Revell, Henderson, Deeble and Maguire; decorations, Messrs Cruickshank, F. Henderson, W. Collins, J. Pirret, E. T. Frost, Patterson and Fulton ; afternoon tea and supper, Mesdames Leaman, Revell, C. M. Osborne, W. G. Graham, Misses E. Paton and Edna Graham. The flags and Christmas tree were arranged for by Mr Fulton and Mrs Cruickshanks Special praise is due to Mr P. Lewis who acted as secretary to the League during the initiatory proceedings.
ladies in the Church on 'j Tuesday last by Mrs Sauuder, of St. * David's Church, Auckland and after a resolution to form a branch of tho Union at Tuakau was passed, the following officers were elected, viz :
President, Mrs Butterworth; vicepresidents, Mesdames W. Cole and W. Glasgow; secretary, Mrs J. McFarland; treasurer, Miss N. Henderson. Afternoon tea was served during the proceedings. Several building sites on Anzac road, part of the Henderson estate, have been sold during the last few days by Mi J. Henderson to Mr Higgins and the Rev. L. Foulkes at prices that averaged £3O per quarter acre. Dwellings are to be erected in each instance.
Amongst the " boys " that left for camp with the Franklin quota of the 23rd Reinforcement on Tuesday last were Messrs A. Smeed and W. Dyer.
