Herries' visit to Pukekohe last Tuesday an introduction to the Minister was sought by and accorded to Peter Awanui, the chief of the local natives, who took the opportunity of welcoming Mr Herries in his capacity as Minister for Native Affairs to Pukekohe and assured him of the people he (Awanui) represented and of their sincere hope that the British Empire would prove successful in the war. Awanui's remarks were interpreted by Mr Balneavis (the Minister's Private Secretary) and through the same agency Mr Herries thanked the Maori for his patriotic expressions and assuied him that His Excellency the Governor appreciated the fact that the natives of the Lower Waikato were so loyal to the Empire.
