THE ADVANCE.
W Id Rinnan, yon. tire battle's eyes— Who, hovering over forest air, Can all the belts of cloud de-pise And through them fall without daspair— No cannon's .sound to you can rise, But bay how goes the battle there As they advance? D.i dumb, wild heart, for they are dumb - - Our men advancing. All's at stake! The woods are bu.let-stript-with turn Of cannon all the pastures shake; And some will cross the crest, and some Will halt for ever in the brake As they advance! The ground is bubbling—p : t and mire--And blackened with the blood of soiv<. Death rains on every yard; and fire Shuttles the veil with woof of guns. Heavenly the Hag those wvavers dir.i Shall make to shroud our grllant on-s As they at vanuo! They folio v now—who rode so well— A braver hunt than e'er '.lew horn Through many a warren'd wood of net! They'll follow, till the fateful mon. And then the muds tamed sentinel Shall watch, and see an aga newborn ! As they lulvanc'e! —HERBERT TRENCH in "The '1 iinos."
