TUAKAU.
THE PATRIOTIC LEAGUE. The deep interest taken in patriotic matters by the people of this district was characteristic of an enthusiastic meeting held under the auspices of the Tuakau branch of the Patriotic League on Monday evening last. Mr W. Graham, the president, was in the chair, and matters appei taking to the Children's Fete and Concert fixed for November 15th formed the subject of lengthy consideration. An offer to assist by way of officially opening the proceedings and to sing at the concert in the evening, if requited, was conveyed by letter from Miss Spedding, secretary of the Auckland branch of the League, on behalf of Mrs (Dr; Maguire, of Auckland, and the same was accepted with thanks. Mr E. T. Frost's offer of a prize for either the girls' or thejboy's section in the spelling bee was gladly accepted. With a view to ensuring success and of making it possible for children in the surrounding districts, as well as from Tuakau, to attend the function, the secretary was instructed to make representations with a view of having the proposed date of the function observed as a school holiday. The joint management of the fut ction was allotted to the following, viz.:— School events, Messrs Frost, Bevell and Henderson; boy's events, Messrs W. Graham, Patterson and J. C Quinlan; wool winding and' hat trimming events, etc, Mesdaraea Butterworth and Peeble ; Christmas tree, Mesdames Lewis, Graham and Fulton; stalls, sweets, flowers and pot plants, Misses F. Lewis, I. Howe and M. Mayall; produce, Mesdames Frost, Free and Fulton; concert committee, Mis Hunter, Miss Hyde, Messrs Revell, Patterson, Pirret and Northmore; doorkeepers, Messrs Kevell, Henderson, Deeble and Maguire; decorations, Messrs Cruickshank, F. Henderson, W. Collins, J. Pirrit, E. T. Frost, Patterson and Fulton. Offers to arrange for flags and a Christmas tree were very kindly made by Mr Fulton and Mrs Cruickshanks, respectively, and accepted Statements to the effect that the branch was in the satisfactory position of having £3O in hand, together with the sum of £SO earmarked for the Rev. McDonald Fund, and that the school children's sports gathering, to be held on a date to be fixed, was meeting with good support were made by the chairman.
