PUKEKOHE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The following business, in addition to that recorded in our last issue, was transacted at the meeting of the Borough Council on Wednesday last, viz ■
ROADING MATTERS. The Works' Committee recommended that footpaths be formed in the various streets as under King street, 10 feet; Harris street, 15 feet; Hall Street South, 10 feet on west side and 15 feet on east side; Hall Street North, 10 feet on west side and 15 feet on east side as far as Masonic Hall, thence 15 feet on both sides to Edinburgh street; Edinburgh street, 15 feet ; Boulston's Avenue, 18 feet ; Seddon street, Queen street and Manukau Road, each 10 feet; West Boad to Jackson's corner, 15 feet; Harrington Avenue, Tobin street and Albert street, 18 feet; Victoria street, Dublin street and East street, each 10 feet; Franklin Boad, 15 feet; Station Boad, 10 feet; Prospect Terrace and Nursing Home Boad, 18 feet; all other streets, 10 feet. The Committee also recommended that Mr Bernman be called upon to complete scoria on Daysh's Boad. They considered the cost of concrete formation re the proposed storm water channels for Barter's and Potter's Boads too high to be entertained. The Committee further recommended that frontagers should be asked to contribute only to the cost of kerbing and channelling where the same was in concrete. Cr Patterson contended that owners of properties abutting on spawl channels should pay half the cost in every instance in the same way as owners would for channels in concrete since the effect would be that water would be kept off their lands. He moved an amendment to that effect.
The Mayor pointed out that the concrete channels were subsidiary to the footpaths whereas the spawl channels were for carrying the storm water off the roads, thereby preventing damage that would otherwise occur to the roads. The amendment lapsf d for want of a seconder and the report was adopted. OVERDRAFT TEST CASE. The Mayor reported that in connection with the recent test case heard in Wellington to determine the actual extent to which the Council could raise a bank overdraft it was agreed that the Council would pay the costs of the Bank of New Zealand and a claim of £4O 15s 2d for the same had been received. The amount, however, had since been reduced to £3l 10s, which thfc Council's solicitors (Messrs Martin and Martin) advised was fairly reasonable. It was decided to pay the amount and request the Bank authorities to make a refund to the Council since the action was partially for the Bank's benefit. The Mayor, in reply to Cr Boadley, stated that the Council would in addition have to pay their own solicitors' fees and also £5 5s the Attorney-General's fee as fixed by the Court.
